The Opportunity:

The Assistant Controller will report to the Controller in managing the overall financial operations of the organization ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial records reports and controls. The role involves managing the accounting team overseeing financial reporting budgeting and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This position plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls and supporting strategic financial planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and mentor our accounting staff providing the training and development needed to help build a sector leading finance team.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes to ensure the Board and senior leadership have accurate timely and actionable financial data.
  • Support the Controller in managing daily operations including AP AR Payroll and the General Ledger.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for federal state and local regulations with a specific focus on CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) compliance for federal grants.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of public funding agreements including the rigorous monitoring of sub-recipient records ensuring all expenditures across interim housing and supportive services meet the allowability allocability and reasonableness standards defined under 2 CFR 200 (Uniform Guidance)
  • Lead the preparation and submission of the Indirect Cost Rate Proposal to the organizations cognizant agency including the development of supporting schedules rate information narratives and the Certificate of Indirect Costs.
  • Drive the implementation and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes to increase organizational agility.
  • Collaborate across teams to translate complex accounting principles into clear insights for non-finance professionals.
  • Act as the primary lead for the Annual Single Audit under Uniform Guidance ensuring the accuracy of the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards and maintaining the internal control documentation required to safeguard federal funding.
  • Contribute to the preparation of budgets forecasts and long-term strategic financial analysis.


Qualifications

  • Education & Certification: Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CMA certification is highly preferred.
  • 6 to 8 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance including at least 1 to 2 years in a leadership.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and a high degree of comfort with complex financial reporting.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector and a strong understanding of federal grant requirements (CFR) is a major advantage.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems and make data-driven decisions.

Education and Certification/License Credentials:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred.

Schedule: Hybrid Three days in office Wednesday is mandatory.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS


This position is contingent upon:

  • Satisfactory results of a background check
  • Submitting proof of clear TB test results. Results dated within 60 days prior to hire date are acceptable

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires regular travel between agency sites community partner locations client service events and internal and external meetings. As such:

  • A valid State drivers license and reliable transportation are required.
  • Must be able to travel throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties as part of regular duties.
  • Mileage reimbursement is provided in accordance with agency policy.
  • Occasional evening or weekend travel may be required to attend community events or support client services.
  • Must maintain vehicle insurance as required by law and agency policy.
