Job Summary

Purpose of Position

Dr. David Delene in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a post-undergraduate student with an interest in data processing applied research and atmospheric sciences. This paid internship is intended for people who have completed an undergraduate degree and are interested or plan to attend graduate school.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The person will support mentoring undergraduate students on research projects and assist with preliminary work related to ongoing and upcoming research efforts.
    • Work may include the following tasks.
      • Assisting with gathering and organizing data from approved sources (public datasets sensors instruments and/or model outputs).
      • Assisting with alignment of datasets in time and space when needed.
      • Assisting with process and analyze of datasets creating basic plots and running quality-control checks.
      • Reviewing created structured datasets.
      • Reviewing document on datasets and workflows.
    • This position provides a unique opportunity for mentoring experience guiding undergraduate students working to gain hands-on experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis of real-world data and to contribute to research workflows that may support publications presentations and proposal development.

Minimum Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree and must be accepted as an ATSC Graduate Assistant for Fall 2026.
  • Interest in working with undergraduates on research projects.
  • Basic data-tool skills (e.g. Python coding).
  • Strong organization and willingness to document work
  • Ability to work independently manage time well.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comfort working in a Linux environment or using command line tools.
  • Familiarity with Python for basic data processing and plotting.
  • Experience creating basic figures (time series scatter plots histograms) and writing short summaries of results.
  • Good communication skills: clear progress updates asking questions early and tracking tasks in a simple workflow.
