Job Duties
This position is open to all current Department employees both sworn and professional staff and the public. If filled by a sworn employee the position will retain the rank of Captain. If a professional staff is selected they will serve in a comparable role and hold the title of Director.
Sworn employees applying for this position shall be governed by the State Police Manual and must apply through PageUp and must attach their SP-88 and SP-92P.
About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Aviation Division Director in our Aviation Division in Chesterfield Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:
Being responsible for the effective and efficient management of allocated resources and administers the Departments Aviation and Med-Flight programs statewide.
Directing the activities of the Aviation Division to meet the Departments goals and objectives.
Managing the activities of the Divisions employees for the observance of orders proper performance of duty the maintenance of discipline and to foster a cooperative relationship among the Department and aviation community the public and related agencies and organizations.
Directing the development and administration of cross-training programs/or desk procedures for subordinate supervisory staff to ensure continuity of operation.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
Of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) state and federal regulations governing flight safety and operations.
Of supervisory policies and procedures.
Of budget and procurement policies.
Of aviation maintenance and repair procedures.
Skill:
In aviation operations coordination.
In budget administration.
In the use of Microsoft Office Applications.
In aviation technology and software.
Ability:
To supervise and lead staff.
To strategically plan coordinate and oversee complex flight operations.
To interpret aviation data and safety metrics.
To manage organizational change and support workforce continuity.
To analyze operational needs and anticipate issues.
To review analyze and update division policies and procedures.
To maintain professional standards.
To partner with FAA and industry stakeholders.
To communicate complex aviation issues clearly to executives.
To develop and mentor staff.
Second class FAA medical certificate.
FAA commercial pilot certification with FAA instrument rating in both airplanes and helicopters.
FAA flight instructor and instrument flight instructor ratings in both airplanes and helicopters.
A valid Virginia Drivers License.
Supervisory experience leading and managing aviation operations or directly assisting with such management is required.
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
The Director shall reside within 90 minutes of the Aviation Division Headquarters located at the Chesterfield County Airport.
