PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Hiring Salary: $23.90 - $29.88/hour

OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT

The Water Trades group supports numerous functions across Aurora Water. This includes but is not limited to raw water conveyance water treatment functions stormwater infrastructure improvements and Wastewater functions. Within these functions the Water Trades Technician is responsible for metal fabrication small equipment maintenance 3D printing applications and a demonstrated ability to utilize Computer Aided Design applications.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop solutions for customers problems through the design and fabrication of prototypes and the production of custom solutions or modifications to existing products
  • Provides assistance in the design welding and fabrication of apparatuses tools and parts common to the operation and maintenance of a water and wastewater utility
  • Performs necessary preventative maintenance and repair of equipment components
  • Provides maintenance and repair to all small portable equipment such as pumps generators demolition saws and air compressors
  • Hydraulics repair and troubleshooting electrical repair and troubleshooting as it relates to equipment common to a water/wastewater utility
  • Operates specialized equipment related to the assigned function
  • Respond to emergency repairs of infrastructure
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Will be confirmed through market study

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of progressively responsible experience in equipment maintenance repair and fabrication. An equivalent combination of education training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.
  • Will be confirmed through market study

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a water and/or wastewater utility
  • Experience with Computer-Aided Design applications
  • 3G Welding Certificate

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of practices procedures equipment and systems related to assigned equipment maintenance function; applicable safety practices and procedures; and computer-based maintenance management systems.
  • Standard welding practices
  • Some knowledge of water conveyance systems

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and managerial skills
  • Skill in the use of Windows-based programs
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors
  • Strong welding and fabrication skills
  • Skill in the use of tools required to perform welding and small equipment repair functions

  • Perform physical activities common to maintenance work.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Class 1 Water Distribution Certification and Class 1 Wastewater Collection Certificate and a Colorado Class B Commercial Drivers License or the ability to obtain within a specific time period as directed by departmental policies.
  • 3G welding certificate or the ability to obtain licenses and certificates within a specific time as directed by departmental policies.

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Heavy work that involves moving no more than 100 pounds with or without assistance at a time with help
  • Frequent lifting carrying walking and standing
  • May require frequent pushing pulling bending and stooping
  • Clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
  • Hand/eye coordination for the operation of power tools and welding components.

Work Environment:

  • Works both indoors and outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions noise fumes and chemicals; work may be performed in a confined space. Must be willing to perform overtime standby and/or call back duty.

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer and common office software such as email internet Word and Excel
  • Multiple power tools welding equipment
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle cell phone tools etc.) in the course of their employment.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16 April 10 July 2 and December 24.
