Job Summary
The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the laboratory of Principal Investigator Dr. Beth Dumont in the Dumont Lab. The successful applicant will work on an NIH-funded project to develop and characterize a novel outbred mouse population founded from wild-derived mice. The range of required duties includes but is not limited to: colony management and breeding colony record keeping tissue sample collection and animal phenotyping. The successful applicant must demonstrate outstanding organizational and communication skills model effective mental concentration visual attention and manipulative skills and work effectively in a team environment.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
- Establish and maintain an outbred mouse breeding colony including meticulous colony record-keeping;
- Perform sample collection and maintain organized sample inventories;
- Conduct tests and/or procedures on mice following standard or detailed protocols;
- Perform data collection with attention to accuracy and precision;
- Coordinate and communicate with other project participants.
Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Mouse handling and husbandry skills required
- Familiarity with colony management practices required
- Fundamental computer skills including familiarity with Excel and Word
- Ability to clearly and concisely communicate information verbally and in written form.
- Ability to demonstrate effective mental concentration visual attention and dexterity
- Ability to interact with individuals in a productive professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program
- Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated ability to organize time effectively and work under time constraints meet deadlines and prioritize work
- Regular reliable and consistent attendance
Education Required: High School Diploma or GED
Education Preferred: Bachelors Degree
Experience Required: 1 year
Experience Preferred: 1-2 years
Pay Range: $18.59 - $29.51 per hour based upon experience
