Short Description
The Nursing School Critical Care Tech under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) assists with patients activities of daily living and supports the overall plan of care. This role involves direct communication with and support for the healthcare team patients and their families or significant others. The position requires maintaining high standards of professional ethics and contributing to the delivery of quality patient care within the organization.
- Support patients activities of daily living (bathing dressing feeding hygiene mobility transport) and follow standard precautions
- Perform technical duties as directed by RN (phlebotomy vital signs point of care testing EKGs Foley catheter care) and document appropriately.
- Identify and communicate changes in patient status to RN and respond appropriately maintaining safe patient practices.
- Reinforce education for patients and families regarding care needs and safety.
- Participate in patient satisfaction initiatives performance improvement activities and assist in orienting new hires.
- Complete annual hospital and unit-specific competencies by the required due date.
- Consistently adhere to safety protocols and quality standards to ensure a safe environment and high-quality patient care.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with patients visitors and coworkers.
- Capacity to identify and communicate changes in patient status.
Overview
Cooper University Health Care has partnered with Rutgers School of Nursing to develop a two-year program that provides a pathway to critical care nursing forstudents going into their junior year of nursing school. Three selected students will rotate every three months through the Medical ICU Trauma Surgical ICU and Neuroscience ICU. Students must rotate to every unit and stay in the Pathway Program as a critical care technician PRN until they are ready to become a nurse.
This pathway is intended to provide the students with unique and hands-on experience in critical care. At the end of the two years the students may be matched with one of the three units to start their nursing careers.
To be considered for this position you need:
- GPA of 3.5 or greater
- Letter of recommendation from a member of the Rutgers Nursing faculty
- 500-word personal statement expressing your interest in critical care nursing
- Completed your fundamental of nursing course
- Must be able to work in role for two years

Experience Required
0-2 years of experience preferred
Education Requirements
- High School/GED required.
- Successful completion of Fundamentals of Nursing course with clinical in an accredited nursing program and maintain active enrollment in nursing school required.
License/Certification Requirements
- AHA Basic Life Support certification.
- Completed at least one fundamental nursing course with clinical in an accredited nursing program and maintain active enrollment in nursing school.
Special Requirements
Requires 4 shifts (7a-7:30p) or (7p-7:30a) in a 6-week period three of them being weekend shifts & holidays: 1 winter 1 summer 1 hallmark.
