Period of Performance: Time of Award up to one (1) year.
Type of Employment: Full-time 40 hours per week.
Estimated Pay: $54.92 per hour.
Pay Holidays: Twelve (12) Paid Holidays.
Paid Time Off: Up to 80 hours which starts accruing on the day of hire.
Sick Leave: Up to 56 hours which starts accruing on the day of hire.
Working Hours
The Dental Hygienist will work an estimated 16 sessions per week. Services will be scheduled between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday five (5) days a week with a thirty-minute unpaid lunch period excluding federal holidays. The schedule is subject to change based on the institutions variable needs and the unpredictable nature of the correctional environment.
Summary of Duties
The Dental Hygienist will provide dental prophylaxis preventive oral health services and periodontal services for Adults in Custody (AIC) referred by the Dental Staff and will assist the Dental Officer with other related duties.
Qualifications
- Must be certified/licensed as a Dental Hygienist in the State of New York.
- Must hold a current certification and registration in General Dentistry and Periodontology as a Dental Hygienist. Training
- Dental radiology certification required.
- Anesthesia certification is preferred.
- A minimum of six (6) months of experience is preferred.
- Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Correctional Environment experience is preferred.
- Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.

Attire
The Dental Hygienist is expected to dress professionally at all times. The Dental Hygienist will be required to wear a uniform or scrubs. Any scrubs worn should not be Khaki or Brown. The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing and should not be tight-fitting or low-cut without an undershirt. Open-toe shoes are not the event that the Dental Hygienists dress does not comply with the MDCs expectations the Dental Hygienist will not be permitted entry into the MDC. The Government will not be financially responsible for the time it takes to return to the MDC with proper clothing.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide dental prophylaxis to AICs who are referred by the dental staff.
- Provide thorough individualized oral hygiene instructions for each patient.
- Monitor oral hygiene and periodontal condition on each patient seen for dental prophylaxis.
- Assess and document vital signs.
- Complete necessary dental x-rays as specified by the dentist.
- Sterilize instruments used for prophylaxis and other instruments as specified by the dental or medical staff.
- Perform necessary paperwork related to scheduling patients for dental prophylaxis as directed by the dental staff.
- Documents care within the Bureaus Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
- Properly dispose of paper documents such as shredding when warranted.
- Assist the Dental or Chief Dentist with patient care when and if needed.
