The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) inspires and connects diverse communities through the transformative power of music. The Communications Manager plays a key role in advancing the DSOs mission by supporting the Director of Communications across media relations content development and storytelling. This position contributes to how the DSO connects with audiences artists partners and the broader community by ensuring communications are strategic compelling and aligned with institutional priorities.


Key Responsibilities


Press & Media Relations

  • Pitch impactful and relevant stories to local and national media outlets in support of the DSOs mission and strategic objectives.
  • Draft edit and assist in the distribution of press releases and media materials.
  • Coordinate closely with the DSOs external public relations firm to secure ongoing media coverage.
  • Support media requests by arranging interviews coordinating photoshoots and preparing background materials.
  • Cultivate and maintain trusted relationships with local and regional media contacts.

Content & Storytelling

  • Manage the DSOs program book content in collaboration with the Marketing team including editing program notes and artist biographies and coordinating additional content as needed.
  • Manage and maintain the DSOs photo and video asset library.
  • Assist with coordinating concert photography and internal photo or video shoots.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the Communications & Media team to support social media content creation and storytelling initiatives that foster audience connection and engagement.
Requirements
  • Bachelors degree required (communications journalism English marketing or music with relevant communications and/or PR experience preferred).
  • 24 years of relevant professional experience in communications media or public relations.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills with the ability to adapt voice and tone for multiple audiences.
  • Classical music training or demonstrated knowledge is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience in arts organizations or nonprofit environments is strongly valued.
  • Interest in and experience with content creation and social media platforms is desirable.

Working Conditions

  • This is a salaried role with responsibility for outcomes rather than hours worked.
  • Evening and weekend availability required at times.
  • Hybrid work environment.
