Job Summary:
Under the direction of a commanding officer the Sergeant is assigned primary responsibility as a working first line supervisor in addition to general law enforcement and specialized work assignments performed by Police Officers and Corporals. Work assignments require the use of independent judgment and the ability to provide leadership to others. The Sergeant rank is distinguished from the Corporal by the full-time assignment of supervisory duties including making work assignmentsmonitoringand reporting work activities andprovidingonthejob training andassistanceto subordinates.
Responsibilities:
Supervise assigned sworn and non-sworn personnel through anon scenepresence.
Review and approve clear and comprehensive written reports and documents.
Receive input from members of the campus community etc.
Function asanon-duty Watch Commander.
Responsible for supervising all departmental field activities during an assigned shift
General Law Enforcement: Enforce lawsrulesand regulations; act as a team leader on criminal investigations and other incidents; make arrests; conduct interviews; transport prisoners; testify in court proceedings asrequired.
Patrol campusand surrounding areas on foot or using motor vehicles.
Investigate traffic collisions and other problems; issue citations; provide safety escorts; respond to radio calls and other duties as assigned.
Writereports to accurately describe events; draft diagrams of locations or scenes.
Respond to situations involving illness or injury; provide first aid or emergency medical care or assessment at the level of training provided to the employee
Training:Provide onthejob training development and evaluation to assigned staff and oversee training conducted byothers;this includes general oversight of Field Trainees on an assigned shift and coordination with Field Training Officers involved. Conduct roll-call training atthe beginningof each shift.
Conduct safety training andmonitorworkplace conditions for safety hazards.
Administrative: Various departmental assignments including planning and scheduling assignments torepresentthe department at meetings on committees and task forces.
Other classification related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy.
Three or more years of active law enforcement experience.
Completion of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.
RequiredQualifications:
Comprehensive knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
Comprehensive knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
Comprehensive knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures.
Effective oral and written communication skills including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
Ability to provide effective leadershiptrainingand direction to assigned personnel.
Ability to supervise and evaluate employees effectively.
Ability toassistin developing department policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree.
Minimum (2) years of prior supervisory experience in the form of formal supervisor position team leader or acting supervisory roles is preferred.
Possess valid California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST)
Basic POST certificate (Must provide POST proof of POST eligibility numberin accordance withSB 2 and SB 960 complaint with California Government Code 1029 & 1031 prior to employment)
Possession of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Certificate or the ability to obtain within one (1)yearof appointment.
Possession of a P.O.S.T. IntermediateCertificate. Advanced P.O.S.T is highly desirable.

CSU Classification Salary StepRange: $7763-$11449per month (Step 1 Step 22)

Work status:Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary(up toone year with the possibility of further renewal)
Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am 5:00 pm) some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm) some evenings/weekends.
Working Hours:Three 12-hour shifts with one 8-hour shift every other week

Background Check

DriversLicense Check
Possession of avalid Drivers License is in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid drivers license and reflects driving record.
Physical Exam
Employment is contingent uponcandidatepassing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to liftin excess of50 lbs.
