Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education is hiring for a Science Specialist to provide leadership and technical assistance that promotes high-quality instruction in a well-articulated science education program for Virginias PreK-12 students.

The Science Specialist would be expected to fulfill the following duties:

  • Providing professional training and implementation supports for school divisions with high-quality instructional materials and evidence -based science education research;
  • Developing administering and implementing projects activities and services that impact statewide science achievement of students including multilingual learners and students with special needs;
  • Supporting educators and leaders in the field with the implementation of the Science Standards of Learning;
  • Reviewing and implementing science high-quality instructional materials and assessment materials and procedures;
  • Facilitating the development and interpretation of policies and procedures that impact science programs and student achievement; and
  • Developing implementing and facilitating science technical assistance at the state level and with divisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of current trends and techniques in science education and Virginias Standards of Learning and assessment programs.
  • Broad knowledge of the life physical and Earth sciences with comprehensive knowledge in at least one area of science.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based science education research and instructional practices.
  • Considerable experience with the development and implementation of science curricula instructional and assessment resources and professional development.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning program local school divisions and state and local government policies and procedures.
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Highly organized and able to independently manage time and workload adjust work schedules to meet new or emerging priorities meet schedules consistently forecast developing trends and work collaboratively with and lead staff members in both K-12 and higher education in complex initiatives.
  • Skills in utilizing computer software for word processing graphical presentation databases spreadsheets and other technological systems and resources to complete assigned responsibilities.
  • Experience teaching K-12 science.
  • Experience in organizing and providing professional development with teachers and adult learners.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience with school leadership is preferred.
  • An advanced degree within the discipline of science or science education is preferred.
  • Experience with division science leadership is preferred.
  • Experience in project management resource allocation and budgeting is preferred.
  • Experience in developing K-12 science educational programs or services as well as program administration and long-range planning is preferred.
