Position
The Ethnic Studies Librarian serves as the subject specialist and liaison to students and faculty in the African American Studies and Asian American Studies departments providing library instruction research support collection development and outreach. Strong disciplinary expertise in Ethnic Studies and/or related fields is expected. This position teaches specialized course-integrated instruction sessions in both in-person and virtual formats and designs and delivers library-sponsored workshops on disciplinary-specific and general topics. As a member of the Public Services Unit the Ethnic Studies Librarian also participates in general reference and instruction services (e.g. reference desk hours both in-person and online and general library instruction sessions). This librarian provides in-depth research consultations in person and online and develops research guides tutorials and other asynchronous learning resources to support student learning and research in Ethnic Studies. The successful candidate will also work collaboratively with faculty to develop library collections in Ethnic Studies and related areas. The Ethnic Studies librarian may also support additional departments and programs as needed.

Librarians at CSUF have faculty status and are expected to meet promotion and tenure requirements including scholarly/professional and service activities as outlined in Library Department Personnel Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Librarys extensive instruction program by planning teaching and assessing faculty-requested library instruction sessions
  • In collaboration with the reference team of librarians provide research assistance to the campus community via in-person and virtual research consultations and scheduled reference shifts
  • Perform subject liaison roles for AfricanAmerican Studies Asian American Studies and other Ethnic Studies departments as needed developing collaborative relationships with faculty.
  • Lead the library team supporting Diversity Initiatives & Resource Centers (DIRC) serving as liaison to the centers as needed
  • Work with the Collection Development & Management Librarian to identify and select materials in subject areas and consult on accreditation reports
  • Create and maintain online instructional materials and subject-specific content for the library website
  • Take part in scholarly/creative activities and serve on department library professional and university committees as part of the required tenure and promotion process
  • Contribute to library strategic initiatives special projects and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent institution by the time of appointment
  • Academic background or demonstrated expertise in any of the disciplines within Ethnic Studies or related fields (e.g. African American Studies Asian American Studies Native American & Indigenous Studies Chicana/o & Latinx Studies Middle Eastern & North African Studies Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian Studies Critical Race Studies or other interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies areas).
  • Knowledge and experience with discipline-specific information databases and other research resources
  • Experience in research assistance via in-person virtual reference consultations and teaching information literacy in higher education or comparable area
  • Effective interpersonal oral and written communication skills
  • Ability or expertise supporting a diverse environment with co-workers students faculty and the wider campus community
  • Evidence of or interest in the pursuit of scholarly creative and professional activities
  • Ability to balance core librarian duties with scholarly creative and professional growth activities and service
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Ethnic Studies or related fields (e.g. African American Studies Asian American Studies Native American & Indigenous Studies Chicana/o & Latinx Studies Middle Eastern & North African Studies Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian Studies Critical Race Studies or other interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies areas).
  • Experience integrating emerging technologies to develop and lead dynamic engaging library instructional sessions
  • Experience supporting library outreach efforts to the campus community in person and online

    The Library
    We serve more than 40000 students as well as approximately 4000 faculty and staff. Our website is a vital component of the Librarys extensive instruction program and serves as a gateway to library resources that include 1.6 million books government documents and audiovisual materials; over 230000 periodicals available electronically or in print; and over 400 electronic databases. The staff includes 20 FTE librarians 27 FTE paraprofessionals and 57 student assistants. Reference and instruction librarians teach an average of 800 instruction sessions per academic year and maintain one of the busiest reference services operations in the CSU system.

    The College of Humanities & Social Sciences
    In accordance with California State law (AB 1460) the California State University (CSU) system requires all undergraduate students to complete at least one three-unit Ethnic Studies course as part of their General Education (GE) package in order to graduate. This Ethnic Studies requirement is designed to ensure that every graduate gains foundational knowledge of the histories cultures and lived experiences of historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups such as African Americans Asian Americans Native Americans and Latinx communities and meets core competencies that include critical analysis of race racism and social justice. At CSUF the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) plays a central role in supporting this requirement by offering a range of Ethnic Studies and related courses taught through departments such as African American Studies Asian American Studies and Chicana and Chicano Studies. The Ethnic Studies Librarian supports this requirement by building and managing collections aligned with curriculum in Ethnic Studies and related disciplines working closely with department faculty and providing dedicated library instruction and research support for Ethnic Studies courses.

    Compensation
    The Senior Assistant Librarian 12-month classification salary range is $7127 to $15211. The anticipated hiring range is $7127 to $7227 per month. A 10-month appointment is also an option
