Job Summary:

The Mead Witter School of Music seeks an Assistant Technical Director to work closely with the Technical Director to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders (ensemble conductors music faculty students staff guest artists and student technicians) to produce live and recorded events in the Mead Witter School of Music. The position primarily oversees the audio elements of those events but also supports other technical areas as needed. We anticipate the starting date of this position to be August 17 2026.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following responsibilities:

  • Provide production support for School of Music events primarily in live audio but also in video lighting and staging.

  • Assist in troubleshooting technical systems.

  • Direct the work of student hourly technicians.

  • With Technical Director determine and communicate staffing for upcoming department events.

  • Manage storage and inventory of audio equipment.

  • Maintain and enforce current best practices related to live and recorded music events.

  • Provide input on audio/visual system design equipment and practices.

This role requires a flexible work schedule that includes supporting events on evenings and weekends.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Sets up adjusts connects operates and troubleshoots complex audio and/or video equipment and related peripherals in various environments
  • Leads system design and installation of broadcast streaming and post-production related technology
  • Schedules logistics and acts as station representative for remote production venues and ensures required technical specifications will be met during on or off-site productions
  • Digitally records edits and finalizes media in a variety of formats according to station standards and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations
  • Tests and maintains equipment and provides recommendations for alternative hardware and software to improve performance
  • May serve as engineering team lead for on or off-site productions
  • Trains staff on equipment procedures and standards

The School of Music is located in the Humanities Building on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with performance and rehearsal facilities in historic Music Hall and the state-of-the-art Hamel Music Center.

Compensation:

This is a 9-month salary position at 100% time. The expected starting salary rate for this position is $42509-$47000 depending on qualifications and experience.
