Math Specialist Preschool - 3rd Grade

The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a full-time Math Specialist for Preschool - Grade 3. We are a Preschool to Grade 8 progressive independent school located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania with an enrollment of approximately 420 students. Since our founding in 1972 The Philadelphia School has grown in size complexity and diversity. Position Summary:

The Learning Resources team at The Philadelphia School seeks to provide support in both academic and social-emotional contexts. Our team includes learning specialists and expert mental health professionals who help students teachers and parents navigate the teaching and learning process. They provide support in language arts mathematics and executive functioning skills to students and address a diversity of learning styles.

The Math Specialist will work with small groups of students on foundational skills and push into classrooms to work alongside teachers and students. The successful candidate will be someone who is knowledgeable about best practices and current research as it relates to preschool through 3rd grade mathematics to ensure the best possible experience and outcomes for our wide range of learners.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design adapt and implement developmentally appropriate inquiry-based math curriculum aligned with progressive educational philosophy and current best practices.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate mathematical concepts across disciplines and ensure continuity and coherence across grade levels.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty supporting effective math instruction and differentiation strategies in the classroom.
  • Co-teach or model lessons to support teacher growth and student engagement in mathematical thinking.
  • Design and administer assessments (formal and informal) to track student progress and inform instruction.
  • Identify students requiring additional support or enrichment and implement targeted small group or one-on-one instruction.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings grade-level teams and curriculum planning groups.
  • Lead or facilitate professional development sessions focused on mathematics teaching and learning.
  • Partner with families to support students mathematical development through conferences progress reports and occasional workshops or events.
  • Engage in a range of activities for school-sponsored and individually-sought professional development including a periodic process of growth-oriented feedback and evaluation
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives including other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required; masters degree in a related field of study preferred
  • 5 years lead teaching experience required
  • Flexible collaborative educator with a deep interest in progressive education and a constructivist approach to teaching and learning mathematics
  • Solid understanding of child development including the social emotional and intellectual domains
  • Ability and commitment to create a warm nurturing and supportive classroom for young children
  • Strong writing editing and communication skills at the team student and family levels; strong interpersonal skills too
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging as integral to the curriculum and community experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with integrating technology
  • Familiarity with various teaching programs such as Responsive Classroom Bridges in Mathematics and/or The Connected Mathematics Project
  • Passion for instilling in children a lifelong love of learning

Faculty are encouraged to partner with the Auxiliary Programming team to deliver up to two weeks of summer camp instruction as well as extra-curricular club facilitation throughout the academic year. Participation in auxiliary programming supports the educational mission and helps sustain resources that benefit the entire TPS community. We value the unique expertise our teachers bring to these programs and additional compensation is generally provided in recognition of this additional commitment.

The pay range for this position is $65000 - $85000 depending on education and applicable experience.
