Description of Work

This position is a vital part of residential services which allow eligible people from around the state to receive services in this one-of-kind program in North Carolina. It is based at the DSB Career and Training Center (CTC) in Raleigh NC which offers services to individuals who are visually impaired blind or deafblind to assist them with achieving their goals of independence education and employment. Services are available to adults and teens. Many individuals served also have secondary disabilities.

The CTC offers residential services 24 hours a day five to seven days a week 12 months a year. All residential students return home for holidays and scheduled breaks. This position works 2pm-10:30pm Sunday through Thursday. It serves in a rotation of staff who cover third shift absences when needed. Students participate in classroom instruction during the weekdays and in the evenings they practice skills learned in the classroom in real life settings. The Residential Life and Technology Assistant works collaboratively as part of a team to support individuals in the residential program. Supports include reinforcement of classroom learning regarding assistive technology and daily living skills. Additionally this position works with the residential life team to ensure safety and security while also allowing students to function as independently as possible within their specific circumstances. Other activities include assisting with recreational activities orientation to the facility and supporting students who are adapting to change.

This position works under the direct supervision of the Residential Life Coordinator and is expected to work collaboratively as an integral part of the residential services team while also exercising initiative and sound judgment. While this position requires technical knowledge it requires a mix of both technical and human service skills. Onboarding training on technology used by individuals who are blind visually impaired or deafblind is available. Division of Services for the Blind also offers an annual training week to CTC staff as well as intermittent trainings on topics essential to providing effective services to the people we serve.

Salary Range: $32287 - $56502

Recruitment Range: $32287 - $50000

The Knowledge Skills and Abilities/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred.

  • Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Experience working in a residential setting.
  • First Aid CPR and AED certification.
  • Familiar with JAWS Zoom Text and other assistive technology.

This position is funded in part through federal funds.

This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.

The Division of Services for the Blind provides services to people who are visually impaired blind and deaf-blind to help them reach their goals of independence and employment.
