Job Description:
Primary Purpose
The primary objective of this position is to coordinate all activities related to the running of the BETS (Bridging Entrepreneurs to Students) program and to support the E Co-op entrepreneurial environment in ways that ensure students in both programs have successful work term experiences either working for local start-ups or managing their own ventures. The Undergraduate BETS and E Co-op Advisor is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the BETS Co-op program and independent administrative support for the E Co-op program. This involves recruiting employers for work term placements matching students and employers tracking student progress developing and implementing workshops overseeing day-to-day program operations preparing summary reports of program outcomes and student success and supporting the planning and execution of events leading up to the Faculty of Engineering Capstone Design competition. This position is contingent upon funding.
Key Accountabilities
Administration Student Related including but not limited to:
Working with CEE (Co-operative and Experiential Education) to administer a screening process for selecting student applicants to the BETS Co-op program
Advising students on the suitability of BETS Co-op given their learning and career objectives entrepreneurial mind-set and willingness to work on projects which will stretch their abilities
Establishing milestones and working to maintain and continuously redevelop and adapt a system for tracking student learning during the BETS program
Working independently for all E Co-op process steps from intake of applications and resumes scheduling and conducting interviews decision-making criteria for acceptance development of term goals work plan assessing progress and final work term evaluations
Assessing progress of BETS and E Co-op students during their work terms (reviewing initial term goals & objectives generating bi-monthly progress reports to look for new opportunities flagging critical issues related to work plan revisions and execution)
Identifying and facilitating opportunities for BETS Co-op students to attend community events that will further their baseline employment skills for future traditional work term placements
Providing mentorship and advice to Capstone teams as they progress through the competition each term
Preparing reports on the success of students and overall progress of program objectives
Coordinating speakers workshops and other events designed to develop practical skills including business writing and communication problem identification and analysis team-building and leadership skills and project management
Performing final evaluations of BETS Co-op students taking into consideration feedback from work placement employers
Developing relationships with local start-up companies in order to recruit employers for BETS work term placements
Administration Program Related including but not limited to:
Participating in the development of strategies to expand BETS Co-op identifying and championing allied programs including E Co-op and providing opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in entrepreneurship
Leveraging the entrepreneurial ecosystem at UW for E Co-op students to develop deeper perspectives & opportunities with programs such as Engineering Capstone BETS Co-op Velocity GreenHouse Stratford Campus Accelerator Centre and Communitech
Planning and executing events each term leading up to the Engineering Capstone Design competition
Representing the interests of BETS Co-op and E Co-op stakeholders to the Conrad School management team and the university
Liaising with the Faculty of Engineering office regarding details of the final Capstone competition
Assisting in the preparation of proposals and applications to seek additional funding for undergraduate programs available through the Conrad School
Outreach including but not limited to:
Developing relationships with local start-up companies to recruit employers for work term placements
Autonomously develop create and lead events designed to increase awareness about the E Co-op and BETS Co-op programs
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelors degree in a discipline relevant to forming new ventures and/or technology business is required
Masters degree (e.g. MBET MBA MMSc MASc) preferred
Experience
Knowledge and experience relevant to creating new ventures (e.g. co-founder dynamics including departures & on-boarding founders shareholders agreements legal structures & early risk mitigation processes for prototype criteria and creation/build market testing strategies for funnel conversions)
Excellent human relations skills; in particular an ability to successfully advise students and actively engage in the business community
Strong time management task prioritization and decision-making skills
The ability to work independently and autonomously on complex projects and tasks
Outstanding ability to build constructive team relationships which create collaboration and support for the objectives of the BETS Co-op and E Co-op programs
Strong ability to create and implement systems and policies
Knowledge of UW policies and academic programs as they relate to advising BETS Co-op and E Co-op students
Exceptional communication abilities both verbal and written
Proven ability to manage a large volume of work conflicting priorities and deadlines
Technical
Intermediate computing skills including Word Excel and PowerPoint.
