Job Duties

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking an experienced professional to serve as the State Facility Admission and Diversion Specialist to work within the Patient Clinical Services (PCS) office of the Facility Services Division and augment implement and support the mission and vision of DBHDS. The position serves as the primary point of contact for geriatric and forensic admissions and is responsible for daily state hospital admissions to nine state hospitals including seven hospitals that serve adult and geriatric patients one hospital that exclusively serves geriatric patients and one hospital that exclusively serves child and adolescent patients. This position reports to the State Hospital Admissions conjunction with manager oversight this position will utilize clinical and procedural judgement to assess which patients are prioritized for limited resources. A valid unrestricted drivers license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Commonwealths Driver Safety Program are required.

Key responsibilities include:
Maintaining situational awareness of the census and bed availability at all state hospitals the individuals awaiting TDO civil and forensic admission.
Interacting with state hospitals and community service boards (CSBs) as well as emergency departments jails and law enforcement agencies as needed.
Collaborating with patients families guardians Community Services Board (CSB) prescreeners state hospital admission staff law enforcement private hospitals courts jails other DBHDS staff and a variety of community agencies and organizations as needed.
Daily management of the bed census daily communication with hospital staff around bed availability and diversion needs.
Collecting forensic admission information to assure completeness and assigning beds.
Diverting geriatric patients to community resources if necessary.
Maintaining foresight into the upcoming admissions and discharges.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience related to behavioral health disorders intellectual and developmental disabilities substance use disorders and neurocognitive disorders.
Experience with complicated behavioral health co-occurring and comorbid conditions and the problems associated with these conditions.
Experience and knowledge of best practices for maintaining quality of life in the most integrated setting.
Experience with the emergency custody and temporary custody process.
Knowledge and expertise in contemporary best practices in behavioral health services and supports for children adolescents and adults with complex mental illness co-occurring disorders.
Experience with legal system involvement consistent with integration within the least restrictive and most integrated setting including specific
Knowledge and expertise in coordinating the optimum utilization of resources for individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
Understanding of the laws and process in Virginia surrounding ECOs TDOs civil commitment and forensic orders.
Ability to apply recovery concepts and other constructs to service development service delivery and quality improvement approaches for individuals with complicated behavioral health co-occurring and comorbid conditions.
Ability to apply knowledge and expertise to support timely safe and collaborative service provision.
Thorough knowledge of the currently available spectrum of behavioral supports for children adolescents and adults in Virginia.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
