Job Summary
Location: Hampton Newport News Norfolk Portsmouth Suffolk & Virginia Beach
LTC Ombudsman will work to promote and protect the rights dignity safety and quality of life of residents in long- term care facilities. Assists in receiving investigating and resolving complaints in these facilities and advocating for the rights of the residents. Provides information about the ombudsman program to residents family members and the community at large. Maintains records and submits reports. The position of LTC Ombudsman reports to the VP of Advocacy position is part-time.Pay Rate: $20.00/hr-$25.63/hr
Essential functions
Primary duties include:
- Ombudsman Services - Provide quality Ombudsman service to individuals family members and long-term care providers in service area. Provide information counseling complaint counseling and formal complaint investigations. Maintain an objective approach when working with long-term care recipients family members and service providers. Serve as a resource to Resident and Family Councils in development of Councils and for information and guidance.
- Outreach / Development / Planning - Raise local awareness of and advocate for quality long-term care service through consumer and community education. Provide training and education seminars as needed to long-term care staff and volunteers. Develop liaison relationships with other relevant agencies such as DSS APS Legal Aid etc.
- Program Reporting - Provide accurate and complete reports required for program. Assure that reports are submitted in a timely manner. Attend departmental staff meetings trainings and certification meetings as necessary.
- Assist VICAP and SMP program during peak times such as during the Medicare Annual Enrollment period.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- The incumbent in this position may have supervisory responsibility. He or she will be expected to provide leadership and instruction to volunteers.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The environment for this position will be in Nursing and Assisted Living facilities clients homes and in an office setting. Travel required around service area occasionally neighboring areas covered by Bay Aging and to
attend yearly training or conferences some overnight stays are required. around service area and to attend trainings some overnight stays are required the incumbent:
- Will spend substantial time standing sitting speaking and listening.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

- Basic knowledge or experience of the components of long-term care advocacy.
- Ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures ages and economic backgrounds in a culturally competent and sensitive manner.
- Ability to develop a strong sense of trust and rapport with both residents and facility staff in difficult situations; ability to be caring and sensitive to the residents; excellent listening skills; ability to be objective; ability to assess situations define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions; ability to analyze problems and develop objective suggestions for resolving them.
- Exceedingly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills oral and written.
- Knowledge of computers and ability to use standard word processing.
- To be free from any conflict of interest that would allow influence by any person or organization that seeks to interfere with the performance of this position.
EDUCATION:
Bachelors degree or minimal of 5 years experience in LTC field required.
FLSA status: This is a non-exempt position.
