About Us

The Traffic and Road Safety Engineering team of the Department of Public Works develops and ensures comprehensive standards policies procedures and programs are in place to mitigate injury and collisions on Nova Scotias highways.

Our team is comprised of professional staff who develop and manage various policies and programs collect collision and traffic census data conduct engineering studies and analysis and impact traffic control devices legislation and regulations.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Traffic and Road Safety Engineering and working under the general direction of the Traffic Engineering Technician the Traffic Counting Clerk assists with the annual Traffic Count Program by placing and maintaining portable electronic traffic counters on the roads across the province in pre-determined areas/locations. The Clerk also collects and edits traffic count data from the traffic counters and performs start up and repair of traffic counting equipment as required.

Primary Accountabilities

Duties include but are not limited to: deploying and retrieving field data collection equipment; collecting and editing and analyzing traffic count performed are primarily outdoors in various weather conditions.

The position works out of two locations depending on work assignments; Miller Lake and Halifax. The work involves extensive travel throughout the province including overnight stays away from home.

Qualifications and Experience

Three (3) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and related experience may be acceptable.

Must have a valid drivers license with access to reliable transportation; and have the ability to frequently travel and stay away overnight or for multiple nights in the week.

Effective communications skills along with excellent organizational analytical and interpersonal skills are essential. The ideal candidate is self-motivated has the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and is resourceful.

This position forms part of a two-person team so excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills are essential.

Experience using spreadsheet software database software and word processing software is considered a strong asset.

Experience in the collection of traffic data and/or with traffic and highway related work is considered an asset.

Knowledge of the Departments traffic census program is considered an asset.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination standardized tests oral presentations interview(s) and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Normal work week is 35 hours/week.

May be required to work overtime on occasion.

Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

Working out of a work vehicle while travelling throughout the province.

Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information regular requirement to type read and work on a computer.

May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

Additional Information

This is a Temporary employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of December 11 2026. The appointment status (Temporary or Casual) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Salary Range: $1647.65- $1793.47Bi-Weekly
