Description of Work

*This position is Exempt Policymaking and is EXEMPT from certain provisions of the State Human Resources Act (GS 126).

The IT Security and Compliance Specialist II is the subject matter expert on Incident Response and Vulnerability management for both NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) IT infrastructure and systems as well as the DPI K12 Cybersecurity program.

For DPI Infrastructure and systems this position is responsible for the Incident Response lifecycle to include identifying analyzing and responding to cybersecurity incidents. The position will also assess prioritize and coordinate the remediation of security vulnerabilities across DPI infrastructure and systems. All work will be conducted in compliance with State information Security Manual (SISM).

For the DPI K12 Cybersecurity program the position will act as the primary point of contact when a PSU requires cybersecurity incident response support from DPI. The position will also advise PSUs on vulnerability remediation as needed in coordination with partner organizations.


Job Responsibilities:

Provide hands on incident response (IR) subject matter expertise to PSUs upon request and lead day-to-date handling of security incidents for DPI infrastructure and systems.

Analyze vulnerability scans to eliminate false positives and prioritize remediation efforts.

Develop vulnerability reports and report status.

Develop and maintain cybersecurity standard operating procedures and playbooks in compliance with the SISM.

The Office of Digital Learning and Technology Services provides leadership of IT and digital learning initiatives. Included in this Office are the divisions of Digital Teaching and Learning Technology Services Office of Risk Management and Cybersecurity Project Management Enterprise Data and Reporting Systems Modernization Virtual Instruction Support Services IT Procurement and Operations and Enterprise Architecture. This position falls under the Office of Risk Management and Cybersecurity.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in computer science or a related IT field or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in IT Security or closely related area; or Associate degree in computer science or a related IT field or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in IT security or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
