Description of Work

Salary Recruitment Range: $67122- $67122
Salary Grade: NC19
The posting will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the closing date.

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and up to one remote workday per week. The NC Department of Insurance trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the position is to examine P&C L&H and Managed Care (HMO/PPO) insurers that offer commercial and private passenger automobile coverages homeowner coverage commercial coverage workers compensation coverage life coverage and accident and health coverage etc. through the examination of underwriting practices and claims records. The Senior Examiners will assist the Examiner-In-Charge in coordinating examination efforts with company officials. This position will assist in coordinating all travel arrangements; assist Examiner-In-Charge with the pre-examination conference and examination wrap-up conference. This position will also assist with the training of Examiner I personnel. This position may be required to conduct the examinations on-site at the companys offices. As such the examiner may be required to travel.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Management Preferences:

  • Considerable knowledge of insurance principles and practices and department regulation.
  • Considerable knowledge of managed care concepts and terminology.
  • Considerable knowledge of medical/health claims processing.

Minimum Education and Experience

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelors degree in business or economics or a related program from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in policy and rate examinations underwriting claims adjusting work or financial/marketing analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
