Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Division of Marketing and Development is seeking a strategic leader to serve as Deputy Director. This role supports the Director in guiding programs that promote Virginia agriculture enhance market opportunities for producers and strengthen the Commonwealths agricultural economy. The Deputy Director will assist in overseeing statewide marketing initiatives agricultural development programs domestic and international promotions and partnerships with producers industry stakeholders and economic development organizations. This position plays a key leadership role in advancing the agencys mission to promote the economic growth and competitiveness of Virginia agriculture. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to: Support the Director in leadership and management of the Division of Marketing and Development; provide oversight and strategic direction for marketing programs and agribusiness development initiatives; support program managers and staff to ensure alignment with agency goals; build and maintain relationships with agricultural producers industry partners and government entities; assist with budget planning legislative support and operational decision making; and represent the division in meetings presentations and outreach events. Once onboarded this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability hours and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealths telework policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Comprehensive knowledge of government administrative business processes programmatic and operational controls personnel management financial management and budgetary controls. Knowledge of marketing or economic principles and practices. Excellent leadership and managerial knowledge and skills problem solving and analytical skills. Demonstrated planning skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Skill in managing supervisory personnel to develop teamwork and cooperation in the work unit. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a leadership role with a diverse staff. Ability to plan prioritize set objectives and goals to achieve results and work under stressful conditions and tight deadlines. Ability to analyze current and future industry trends and adapt current practices to meet and anticipate industry change. Computer proficiency using MS Office applications. Current or recent related managerial experience in business operations or marketing field. H.S Diploma/GED required.
Additional Considerations
A combination of related education training and experience including preceding knowledge of agriculture business administration or related field may substitute for this education and experience. Working knowledge of state budget and finance policies procurement accounting practices human resource principles and practices and the legislative process preferred. Knowledge of and experience with agriculture agribusiness food or beverage management economic development and/or marketing preferred.
