Job Summary
Company: NRN
Role: Head of Engineering / Engineering Manager (CTO Track)
Location: Sydney (5 days in office some flexibility maybe 4)
Base: $160k$200k super $50k$60k ESOP (flex for top talent)
Product & offering:
NRN is an energy technology platform operating at the intersection of distributed infrastructure real-time data and energy markets.
Installs solar battery systems into residential homes (no upfront cost)
Retains ownership of assets and monetises via licensing to energy retailers
Aggregates assets into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)
Dispatches energy into live electricity markets
Trajectory: Moving from energy infrastructure operator data platform SaaS-enabled energy intelligence business
Size and Functions of Local Team:
18 employees (post-Series A)
2 full-stack engineers
2 data scientists
No dedicated product function
Outgoing CTO available for transition (until 9 May)
What Youll Be Walking Into
Fragmented systems (Salesforce acting as ERP multiple bolt-ons)
Meaningful technical debt
No scalable architecture for upcoming growth (assets)
Need to unify:
Hardware (solar/battery systems)
Software platform
Data pipelines
Real-time market integrations
This is a true rebuild scale challenge not a maintenance role.
Youll own:
Architecture infrastructure
Engineering practices hiring
Product roadmap (no product team yet)
Transition to a scalable data/SaaS platform
Must Haves:
Proven experience in early-stage or scaling startups (Series A/B)
Hands-on engineer (can still code / go deep technically)
Strong systems design architecture capability
Experience building engineering functions from scratch
Backend APIs and data pipeline experience
Cloud experience (GCP preferred)
Comfortable operating in ambiguity with high ownership
Strong product thinking (can prioritise without a PM function)
Nice to haves:
Experience with distributed systems / real-time processing
IoT / hardware-software integrated environments
Energy / climate tech exposure
AI/ML deployment into production
