Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Tax Compliance Officer to ensure accurate tax reporting regulatory compliance and financial record management. This role requires strong knowledge of accounting processes tax regulations and financial systems. The ideal candidate will be proficient in QuickBooks and Gusto with the ability to manage payroll-related tax compliance and maintain accurate financial records in a fast-paced environment.
If you have not prepared and efiled 1120s using a tax software for at least two tax seasons please do not apply. This role is ideal for a compliance-focused accounting professional who enjoys maintaining financial accuracy and ensuring organizations meet all regulatory and tax obligations.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with federal state and local tax regulations
- Prepare and review tax filings including payroll taxes sales tax and other regulatory submissions
- Maintain accurate financial records and reconcile accounts using QuickBooks
- Manage payroll compliance reporting and tax filings through Gusto
- Coordinate with external accountants auditors and tax advisors as needed
- Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations to ensure ongoing compliance
- Assist with financial reporting and documentation for audits
- Review and reconcile payroll records deductions and tax liabilities
- Identify and resolve discrepancies in financial or tax records
- Maintain organized documentation and compliance records for internal and external reporting
Requirements
- Proven experience in US tax compliance accounting or finance
- Technical tax bar Nonnegotiable:
3 full seasons doing individual business returns.
Must have handson experience preparing and efiling:
1040 Sched C
1120S
1120 (Ccorps)
- Comfortable with:
Balance sheet P&L tieouts
M1 / M2
Depreciation vehicle home office mixeduse expenses
In the technical interview you will be tested on 1120s:
Build / review an 1120 from trial balance
Explain book vs tax differences
Walk through their logic out loud
If they mostly did 1040s and helped a bit on business returns thats a no. - Software stack Nonnegotiable:
2 seasons in at least one of:
Lacerte
ProSeries
ProConnect
Drake - Can prove it by:
Walking you through a return in a screenshare test
Using diagnostics overrides efile steps confidently
Setting up organizers / client letters inside the software
Nicetohave (not required but strong signal): has worked in two of the three and can adapt quickly. - Process & documentation Nonnegotiables:
Uses checklists and leaves clear workpapers in the file
Can take a messy client (multiple 1099s Stripe PayPal brand deals) and:
Document assumptions
Note open items
Make it easy for a reviewer to follow
We will test this by giving them a sample client packet and 6090 minutes to prep then review their file together.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field
- Experience supporting audits and working with external CPAs
- Familiarity with multi-entity or multi-state tax environments
