Assistant Coach, Cross Country and Track & Field

Essential Functions:

• Coaches and demonstrates techniques to team members individually and in groups. Manages designated skill development areas or groups of positions. Develops and recommends strategy and teaches theoretical skills.

• Plans coordinates and supervises student athlete practice sessions for mens and womens distance runners during cross-country indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

• Teaches one to two Physical Education courses annually as required for student graduation stand in as needed when requested by Head Coach or Director of Physical Education.

• Recruits quality prospective student-athletes and ensures timely submission of their academic records for admissions.

• Serves as a meet coordinator for the Washington & Lee University Track & Field Carnival and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Track & Field Championships.

• Communicates effectively with head coaches administration and peers about program goals status and needs.

• Complies with all University ODAC Conference and NCAA rules and regulations.

• Supports planning team travel logistics which could include lodging transportation and meal arrangements in accordance with budgetary parameters for the cross-country and track & field programs.

• Other duties as assigned by the head coaching staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A bachelors degree and collegiate competitive experience in cross country or track & field distance events is required while a masters degree and coaching experience with the mid-distance distance or steeplechase events are preferred.

• Must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student-athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship on and off the playing field.

• Role models appropriate behavior and conduct to support the image and reputation of the athletics program.

• Strong understanding of various coaching techniques and a willingness to learn new methods of instruction.

• Must possess a valid drivers license.

Physical Requirements:

• Fingering: Picking pinching typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

• Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

• Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists hands and/or fingers.

• Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

• Standing: Remaining upright on the feet particularly for sustained periods of time.

Working Conditions: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.

Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time the job is rated for Light Work.
