Job context

We are excited to offer a fantastic role working on a Clinical Trial of an Investigational Medicinal Product (CTIMP) specifically The MEDAL Trial within the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit. This is excellent for students who want to show their interest in clinical trials and be involved in the admin support of clinical trials. The student will gain experience in the behind the scenes of clinical trials and get to work alongside experienced researchers and administrators. Data Administrators will provide proactive and important support for the effective delivery of research in the University. You will be involved in all aspects of data management and verification and accurate input and reporting including undertaking regular checks to validate and verify information/taking minutes. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and improvement of procedures and protocols. This role is set to run from lateApril-End of May 2026. Job summary

You will be working with the Trial Manager Sue Tohill who will be your line manager. The trial sites within a portfolio of trials that is overseen by a Team Leader Sarah Tearne. Both Sue and Sarah will support you in your tasks. This role is based within BCTU and is primarily office based. The role is to help with some specific trial related tasks. You will ensure the smooth day-to day running of the study protocol and the data collection flagging up any issues to your manager alongside assisting with general data management and record keeping which may include anonymising data/samples maintaining and applying coding lists etc. The role is to essentially provide administrative support as required. This may include maintaining stocks of supplies assisting in organising meetings and travel and day-to-day distribution of materials to external centres.

Main duties

This role is to support the Trial Manager with the following tasks relating to managing the clinical trial:

  • Sending out letters to trial participants

  • Creating a folder of documents and sending out to sites

  • Completing some filing

  • Entering some data onto a database

  • Proactively managing communications with for example clinical investigators research support staff and others in external centres for data collection ensuring everyone is kept up to date as appropriate.

  • Ensuring confidentiality on all work at all times.

  • Working with senior staff you will test data entry validation and report generation applications reporting errors and suggesting modifications. You may create and test simple ad-hoc data bases forms and report generation on your own initiative.

  • Developing skills and experience by taking part in training to develop advanced computing and broader trial/data management skills.

  • Supports equality and values diversity moderates own behaviour to avoid unfair discriminatory impact or bias on others.

Required knowledge skills qualifications & experience

  • Strong all-round office management experience and possess secretarial skills that must include up-to date computing and office automation skills (e.g. email excellent word processing good document layout etc).

  • Must demonstrate a critical and intelligent attention to detail including high standards of accuracy.

  • Good written/ verbal communication and an excellent telephone manner.

  • A flexible and willing attitude to being part of a multidisciplinary team. Works well independently with access to advice in deciding own short-term priorities and timetabling of tasks to meet agreed deadlines.

  • Aptitude for learning and applying new skills and once trained have the ability to work independently to gather information or simply finding missing or inaccurate data.

  • A data manager should develop an understanding of the general underlying concepts of trial design conduct and analysis.

  • Data Managers are expected to develop an understanding of and have the ability to follow complex data management and administration procedures including the operation and maintenance of complex computer database and information systems.

  • Ability to identify and break down potential problems. Work to develop and improve working procedures with coaching from colleagues and supervision from the Trial Manager e.g. to ensure consistent interpretation and coding of the data.

  • Understands the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace

  • Ability to identify and respond to equality and diversity issues in line with relevant policies and procedures
