Relationship Advisor

The Relationship Advisor manages fiduciary and agency client relationships and delivers fiduciary services. This role is accountable for overall client satisfaction by coordinating with the service team and leveraging Northern Trust (NT) resources to ensure timely execution issue resolution and clear communication.

This partner manages fiduciary relationships in accordance with fiduciary duties client needs and internal procedures and may also support various fiduciary accounts as a Fiduciary Specialist when a Relationship Advisor is not assigned.

What Youll Do

  • Manage an assigned book of wealth management clients; partner with clients and their professional advisors to understand goals and needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of governing documents and account agreements fiduciary duties and applicable laws/oversight (including trust and tax law) estate planning techniques financial planning asset management and prudent investment principles.
  • Lead goals-driven client conversations and deliver holistic advice.
  • Provide proactive guidance on NT products/services emerging issues regulatory/tax changes and recommended client actions.
  • Translate complex concepts into clear non-technical language for clients.
  • Maintain working knowledge of NT resources; apply fiduciary expertise to enhance relationships and identify opportunities.
  • Deliver responsive client service with diplomacy and tact; maintain proactive written and verbal communication at an appropriate frequency and manage time effectively.
  • Apply NT fiduciary standards practices and sound judgment; comply with internal policies processes and procedures to support prudent risk management and issue escalation/resolution.
  • Cultivate referral sources and centers of influence; identify and develop new business opportunities; represent NT in community and professional organizations.
  • Mentor less experienced partners; advise Relationship Advisors on fiduciary issues and serve as a fiduciary resource.
  • Travel to meet with clients as appropriate based on revenue new business opportunities and servicing requirements.
  • Pursue continued development of fiduciary and advisory skills through training and experience.
  • Exercise judgment based on analysis of multiple sources of information.
  • Eligible to serve as Lead Relationship Manager in Private Client Advisory and Private Client Services.

What Will Make You Successful in the Role

  • Knowledge of fiduciary and financial products and services typically gained through relevant work experience required to manage client accounts.
  • Technical knowledge of investments tax legal and operations typically gained through formal education and/or relevant experience required to service clients.
  • Knowledge of fiduciary standards principles and applicable laws and regulations typically gained through training and continuing education required to administer accounts.
  • Skills in negotiation problem solving delegation leadership and business development required to service and grow the client relationship.
  • Ability to explain difficult or sensitive information and build consensus.
  • Bachelors degree and/or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 710 years of experience in fiduciary servicing personal trust estate administration or related fields.

Preferred

  • Progress toward or attainment of professional designations such as CTFA MBA JD or similar advanced credentials.
