The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Transportation Inspector in the Office of Pupil Transportation.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for this position will be placed as a provisional employee. Upon hire the employee will be required to complete a 120-Day Working test period during which the employees performance will be evaluated. Employee must successfully complete the designated probation period in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under direction does work involved in seeing that taxicabs buses limousines and/or parking lot proprietors comply with various codes and regulations governing their operations; does other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
will be required to possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
may be required to possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
(5) years or more of School Bus Driving experience (preferred)
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate rests with the Appointing Authority.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
field inspections on taxicabs buses limousines and/or other passenger vehicles to ensure that they comply with prescribed codes/ordinances/regulations.
license or register license applicants taking background and driving histories.
field inspections on parking lots to ensure that they comply with prescribed codes/regulations governing hours of operations rates charged and so forth.
physical inspections of taxicabs buses limousines and/or other passenger vehicles to ensure cleanliness and general safety of vehicles and may report on areas of needed repairs.
complaints by the public against drivers who violate various codes/regulations governing the operation of vehicles.
whether complaints warrant legal action or warning issuance.
complaint record filing as well as copies of reports/summonses.
summonses and may testify in court and/or at related hearings as to violations recorded.
clear sound accurate and informative reports regarding various vehicle inspections.
vehicles along route to ensure that service is provided according to schedule.
recommendations for changes in service such as need for additional buses route changes and revised schedules to improve service to the public.
be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office or related units.
of various routes to monitor loading/unloading of children on and off of vendor school buses and NPS school buses.
that vendor school buses meet state and federal required safety standard.
that vendor personnel meet state and federal driving and training requirements.
scheduled and unscheduled stop visits to routes and other drop off locations and submit monthly reports of findings.
safety check of bus stops to determine if stop is hazardous.
deficiencies and non-compliance to notify supervisor of violations so investigation and/or informant action can be executed.
other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office or related units.
to read write speak understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

to assist Supervisor with safety related trainings for Omnibus Operators.
to train assigned personnel.
to help supervisor and Transportation Inspector coordinate repairs to district vehicles with Maintenance Vendor.
to report to scenes of school bus accidents and conduct field investigations of vehicular accidents involving school buses.
to conduct field investigations when complaints are logged against contracted school bus companies that provide transportation to district students.
to observe and communicate safe driving practices and methods.
to communicate principle methods and procedures related to a large pupil transportation system.
