The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for a fellowship position in the pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Program. The aim of the Aflac Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) 4th Year Fellowship is to train physicians in the treatment of children and adolescents with SCD. Graduates of the SCD Fellowship will be positioned to participate in and develop SCD programs within pediatric hematology/oncology centers or in private practice. The fellowship will comprise clinical rotations (up to 70%) and up to 30% research which can be tailored based on fellows interest.


Joining the Aflac SCD 4th Year Fellowship offers several opportunities for professional development:

  • Educational topics: Didactics; rotating topics by members of the SCD faculty in areas including hemoglobin electrophoresis interpretation neuropsychology psychology pain management/palliativecare/integrative health and more.
  • Presentations: Clinical and research presentations including at internal conferences and retreats.
  • Leadership: Attend case conferences and participate in treatment discussions.
  • Training: Comprised of clinical rotations (at least 70% includes inpatient and outpatient clinic and multidisciplinary specialty clinic) and up to 30% research.

About the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center has a well-established SCD team. The successful candidate will join one of the countrys most robust pediatric SCD programs.

  • Our SCD program is the largest pediatric SCD program in the nation treating more than 2100 unique pediatric SCD patients each year and comprises a specialized multidisciplinary team of pediatric hematologists nurse practitioners nurses social workers psychologists teachers and chaplains.
  • Faculty and staff continue enhancing the Comprehensive Pain Program and Transition Program with 66 pain clinics visits and 84% of transition patients transitioned to adult care in 2024.
  • The GA Solve Sickle Cell Initiative brings together the Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta Emory University and Morehouse school of Medicine and aims to improve the care of individuals affected by SCD research comprehensive healthcare community education and advocacy.

Requirements: Applicants must have completed their residency training in pediatrics internal medicine or family medicine and show a strong interest in pediatric hematology/oncology. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a fellowship in pediatric or adult hematology/oncology. Applicants are strongly encouraged to have a research question in mind including a hypothesis study aims and specifics of the study population at the time of application.
