Job Summary
The Faculty of Applied & Technical Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor Carpentry. The successful candidate will be expected to have previous experience in delivering a carpentry program through both theoretical and practical examples.
Under the general direction of the Director of the School of Trades the incumbent will organize develop manage and instruct Carpentry programs as required.
Applicants must have exceptional communication and teaching skills; demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; and demonstrable ability to develop experiential and applied research opportunities for students. An ability to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries or deliver courses in community settings would be an asset.
The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in departmental activities service events and initiatives. A commitment to an ongoing program of professional development is required.
Qualifications
The instructor must possess the following:
A Carpenter Certificate of Qualification with an Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement
A minimum of five years experience working in the industry as a journeyperson
Diverse industry experience covering all the competencies in this program
It is preferred that the instructor also possesses at least one of the following:
An instructor diploma or equivalent
A Bachelors Degree in Education
A Masters Degree in Education
The successful candidate will have a diverse industry background; extensive supervisory and management experience; leadership qualities; good interpersonal skills; excellent communication skills; and a working knowledge of computers and various software applications. Preference will be given to individuals with additional certifications related to this trade evidence of on-going upgrading knowledge of the BC Apprenticeship system and evidence of leading people towards a common goal in a diverse working environment.
This position requires someone who will commit to the on-going development of the Carpentry program and has demonstrated abilities for writing lesson plans and exam questions developing presentations as well as marketing and promoting this program. Preference may be given to candidates who have completed or are enrolled in the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program. Applicants should have a demonstrated history of ongoing professional development as both a tradesperson and as an instructor. Applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to creativity innovation and/or the application of technology in the delivery of educational programs will have an advantage.
Consideration will be given to those who have extensive connections and contacts with the local region and a broad involvement with local businesses and organizations. This individual will be a creative thinker who can create excitement and enthusiasm about the trade and the program at UFV. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to teach and support the diverse student population served by UFV as an open access university. Experience in developing and delivering educational programming to both indigenous and international populations is an asset. Applicants who have additional certification in another trade including Joinery may have an advantage.
