Description of Work

Salary Range: 39244.00 - $68679.00

This position is located at Marion Correctional Institution Marion North Carolina. Marion Correctional Institution is a Close-custody prison housing male offenders. The facility is designed to house a maximum capacity of 793 offenders.

Positions in this class provide and supervise programs for the rehabilitation of inmates in the prison system. Positions at this level are accountable for the development implementation and maintenance of total programs activities for inmates of the smaller prison facilities or are accountable for development implementation and maintenance of one or more major and broad programs for inmates at a large facility or institution. The primary programs areas are inmate classification; correctional programs including work release incentive wage study release educational/vocational volunteer programs religion and recreation and correctional counseling. Work involves considerable contact with community agencies to enrich programs establish new programs and to conduct work release investigations if relevant. Positions monitor the effectiveness of community volunteer workers assigned to programs activities and may supervise subordinate staff. Positions are responsible for coordinating programs activities with custody and other facility staff.

Key Job Duties:
This position serves as the Recreation Coordinator and is responsible for the overall recreational program for inmates in a state prison facility.
This position reports to the Associate Warden for Operations and must ensure that performance-based standards and expected practices are established and met.
The position will be accountable for the development implementation and maintenance of the recreational program to include accountability of compliance for accreditation.
The position will develop a comprehensive annual recreation plan to promote the physical mental emotional and social well-being of the population.
The recreation plan will include leisure time activities structured activities special activities and recognition activities that involve both the facility and the community.
The position responsibilities will include recreational activity planning and oversight; seasonal and holiday events; equipment and supply purchasing inventory and distribution; evaluation of recreational areas; proper maintenance of equipment and areas; oversight of library access for all offenders (books movies); and coordinating plans with staff and management.
The position will ensure offenders with disabilities and close custody and/or restrictive housing offenders have access to all recreational programs within their assigned restrictions.
The position will supervise staff and offenders who work with the recreational programs but will not be responsible for an inmate caseload.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum medium close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety security and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff program facilitators and administrative personnel.
