The Opportunity Manchester is a city with a peerless literary and radical history from the industrial observations of Elizabeth Gaskell to the contemporary brilliance of the local performance poetry scene. We are seeking an English Teacher who can tap into this City of Literature energy to inspire our students. This role involves teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 with the potential for A-Level Literature or Language delivery for the right candidate. You will be tasked with developing students analytical prowess their creative flair and their command of the written word in an increasingly digital world.

Core Responsibilities

1. Delivering high-impact lessons that balance the rigorous analysis of canonical texts (Shakespeare Dickens Golding) with the study of modern prose poetry and non-fiction.

2. Teaching the mechanics of English Language focusing on the power of rhetoric persuasive writing and the nuances of linguistic structure and form.

3. Preparing Year 11 students for GCSE English Language and English Literature ensuring they are confident in their ability to extract meaning from unseen texts and write under timed conditions.

4. Implementing effective literacy interventions to bridge the attainment gap and ensure all students can access the wider school curriculum.

5. Leading or contributing to extracurricular initiatives such as debate clubs creative writing workshops or the schools student-led magazine.

The Successful Candidate We are looking for a bibliophile and an expert communicator who can make the most complex themes accessible. Requirements include:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in English Literature English Language or a related field.

• A proven ability to motivate students of all abilities fostering a genuine enthusiasm for reading and critical enquiry.

• Strong subject knowledge across a variety of genres and historical periods and a commitment to inclusive curriculum design.

• Excellent pedagogical skills particularly in the use of modelling scaffolding and live feedback to improve student writing.
