Program Overview Youth Programs & Services Youth Sports & Recreation
The Leader in Training role is structured as a supervised learning-focused position with exposure to two main areas:
(1) supporting the delivery of sports-based programming and
(2) supporting the facilitation of youth recreation programs.
Leaders in Training will work alongside experienced staff coaches and peers to assist with program delivery including helping with game setup equipment organization and basic logistics. They will also support communication with participants and community members to help ensure programs run smoothly and are welcoming and this role Leaders in Training are expected to actively support coaches and program leads during program delivery. As part of their development they will practice foundational leadership skills such as leading warm-ups supporting drills and guiding small group activities always under the supervision and direction of staff.
What You Will Do
- Demonstrates a willingness to learn and engage with trauma-informed anti-oppressive and anti-racist approaches including Anti-Black Racism (ABR) and an understanding of the impacts of colonialism
- Supports the creation of safe inclusive and welcoming spaces for youth including 2SLGBTQIA communities
- Assists with the setup and takedown of games and programming including transporting and organizing equipment with support from team members
- Works alongside staff leaders and coaches to support the delivery of programs that build life skills such as communication teamwork and confidence
- Participates in program activities and shares ideas and feedback to improve youth engagement and experience
- Supports recreational programming within youth spaces such as drop-in centres and may assist during program hours (e.g. 37pm shifts)
- Assists with communication tasks including welcoming participants answering basic questions and sharing program information with support from staff
- Contributes to a positive and supportive youth environment that promotes wellbeing and inclusion
- Participates in community outreach and partnership activities as opportunities arise
- Shares information about other WoodGreen programs and services when appropriate and with guidance
- Participates in team meetings training and learning opportunities
- Attends community or partner meetings as appropriate for learning and exposure
- Current enrollment in high school or a diploma/enrollment in a program related to health recreation sports or community services is considered an asset; or a demonstrated interest in gaining experience in these areas. CPR/First Aid and Coaching Certifications are assets but can be supported through training opportunities.
- Some experience participating in sports recreation or community activities is preferred. Previous leadership experience is an asset but not required. An interest in working with youth and learning facilitation skills is essential.

- Lived experience participating in sports or recreation activities (formal or informal)
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with peers and youth
- Openness to feedback coaching and mentorship
- Ability to work collaboratively with others
- Basic organizational and communication skills
- Comfort using or learning basic digital tools (Word Excel etc.)
- Understanding of or interest in equity inclusion and community development
- Ability to take initiative with support and guidance
- Reliability and willingness to contribute to a positive team environment
