The Purpose
Based in Sydney and reporting to the Chief General Counsel the General Manager Legal is the second-in-command within the legal function and plays a critical role in leading the delivery of legal services across AP.
This is a broad enterprise-facing role where you will combine strategic legal leadership with hands-on oversight - ensuring legal advice is commercially pragmatic forward-looking and aligned to business priorities across a multi-brand highly regulated payments environment.
You will operate as a trusted advisor to senior executives lead and develop a high-performing legal team and influence outcomes on some of the organisations most important strategic initiatives.
Key Outcomes the Role Owns:
- Act as a trusted deputy to the Chief General Counsel supporting legal strategy and execution across the enterprise.
- Lead legal operations driving continuous improvement in processes service delivery and prioritisation.
- Oversee complex commercial contracting and negotiations providing guidance on high-value and strategically significant matters.
- Provide strategic commercially focused legal advice across all business units including regulatory risk employment and dispute matters.
- Lead regulatory engagement and ensure alignment with evolving legal and compliance obligations in partnership with Group Risk.
- Support major transactions partnerships and strategic initiatives across AP and its schemes (eftpos BPAY NPP).
- Manage external counsel relationships and legal budget.
- Act as the escalation point for sensitive high-risk or complex legal issues.
- Build mentor and lead a high-performing legal team ensuring quality consistency and capability uplift across the function.
Youll likely be a strong fit for this role if:
You are an experienced legal leader operating at Deputy General Counsel or Head of Legal level ready to step into a broader enterprise leadership role.
You bring:
- 10 years post-qualification experience with a current practicing certificate.
- A strong track record in leading legal teams and legal operations within complex organisations.
- Deep experience advising senior executives and Boards on strategic regulatory and commercial matters.
- Proven ability to operate in highly regulated environments - experience in payments financial services critical infrastructure or technology is highly regarded.
- Strength in governance risk management and regulatory engagement.
- A commercial mindset with the ability to balance legal risk with business outcomes.
- The credibility and influence to operate as a trusted advisor across a diverse stakeholder landscape
