Job Summary

Department Overview

The Division of Vascular Surgery at OHSU provides excellent patient care while maintaining educational and research-rich programs that train surgeons and researchers and enhance their understanding of the vascular system. A special interest in quality outcomes and measurement drives much of the divisions research they offer a 2-year vascular and endovascular surgery fellowship as well as an integrated residency program. OHSUs vascular surgeons operate out of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute.

Function/Duties of Position

The Aortic Center Director provides strategic clinical operational and academic leadership for a comprehensive multidisciplinary Aortic Center dedicated to the full spectrum of aortic disease including aneurysms dissections and genetic syndromes. The Director is responsible for program growth; quality and safety performance; care pathway standardization; multidisciplinary coordination (cardiac surgery vascular surgery cardiology radiology anesthesia genetics ICU); referral development; and academic output in both education and research. The role includes active participation in complex open and endovascular aortic care advanced imaging and case planning and longitudinal patient surveillance.


In addition to Center leadership responsibilities the candidate will maintain a high-volume ambulatory and surgical practice within the Division of Vascular Surgery. The Director will provide support and mentorship to junior faculty and Advanced Practice Providers and will partner with division leadership perioperative services and ambulatory operations to optimize clinical workflows across the division and institution.


The candidate will also support the Residency and Fellowship Program Director by contributing to the education of fellows and residents including development and delivery of a structured aortic curriculum.


Finally the Center Director will collaborate with the Division Head of Vascular Surgery the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Surgery and the Director of Research in the Knight Cardiovascular Institute to expand and strengthen the Centers portfolio of clinical trials and research grants. This includes working with division leadership and departmental research administration on the development oversight and management of all extramural funding streams associated with the Center.

Required Qualifications

  • MD/DO (or equivalent) with Board Certification in Vascular Surgery
  • Advanced fellowship training in aortic surgery (open and/or endovascular) or equivalent high-volume experience.
  • Eligibility for state medical licensure and hospital privileges.
  • Documented proficiency with complex aortic surgery (e.g. arch F/B-EVAR TEVAR TAAA reoperations) and perioperative management.
  • Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary programs or teams and experience with quality improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication change management and team-building skills.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring; academic track record appropriate to rank.
  • Ensure that vascular surgery services are available seven (7) days per week twenty-four (24) hours a day by participating in group scheduling and call responsibilities.
  • Responsible for participating in daily multi-disciplinary rounds on nursing units.
  • Performs a broad range of vascular surgical procedures with significant competence in both open and endovascular vascular surgery procedures including aortic disease as well as peripheral arterial disease.
  • Documents clinical care in an appropriate timely and accurate manner including H & Ps operation notes progress notes and DC summaries.
  • Develops a referral base for vascular surgery patients
