Background
The Gwichin Tribal Council(GTC) is a federally recognized Indigenous organization based in InuvikNorthwest Territories representing Gwichin Participants in the NorthwestTerritories and Yukon. Established through the 1992 Gwichin Comprehensive LandClaim Agreement the GTC works to protect and advance Gwichin rights in landculture resources and governance while promoting self-determination andeconomic development. Located above the Arctic Circle Inuvik offers a uniquenorthern lifestyle with year-round access to outdoor activities such as hikingfishing and snowmobiling breathtaking views of the northern lights and astrong sense of community rooted in Gwichin culture and tradition.
ROLE
TheDirector of Operations supports the Chief Operating Officer in the coordinationand execution of organizational operations. This role is responsible foroverseeing departmental activities as assigned ensuring that programs andservices are delivered effectively efficiently and in alignment withorganizational priorities.
TheDirector of Operations focuses on implementation coordination and operationalconsistency across departments while supporting managers and staff inachieving established goals. This position does not set organizational strategybut plays a key role in executing direction established by the COO and seniorleadership.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Providesoversight to assigned departments at the direction of the COO ensuringday-to-day operations are effective and aligned with organizational priorities
Implementsoperational direction and priorities established by the COO and seniorleadership
Supportsdepartmental managers in planning coordinating and delivering programs andservices
Monitorsdepartmental activities to ensure timelines deliverables and servicestandards are met
Facilitatescommunication and coordination across departments to promote alignment andcollaboration
Actsas a central point of contact for operational matters and escalates issues tothe COO as required
Providesguidance and support to managers and supervisors assisting withproblem-solving and workload management
Overseesassigned projects and initiatives ensuring successful execution and completion
Identifiesoperational gaps and supports the development of improved processes andpractices
Supportsadherence to approved budgets and works with Finance and managers to monitorexpenditures
Tracksand reports on departmental performance providing regular updates to the COO
Ensurescompliance with organizational policies funding agreements and applicablelegislation
Promotesa respectful collaborative and culturally aligned work environment acrossteams
QUALIFICATIONS
Post-secondaryeducation in Business Administration Public Administration IndigenousGovernance or a related field is preferred
Anequivalent combination of education training and relevant work experience maybe considered
Demonstratedexperience in operations program coordination or departmental oversight withprogressive leadership responsibility
Experiencesupporting multiple teams or departments preferably within a First Nationspublic sector or non-profit environment
Strongunderstanding of operational processes including program delivery budgetingsupport and organizational systems
Provenability to support implementation of organizational priorities and translatedirection into effective operational plans
Experienceworking collaboratively with leadership teams including providing support tosenior roles such as a Chief Operating Officer or equivalent
Knowledgeof Indigenous governance structures cultural values and community-basedservice delivery is considered a strong asset
Strongleadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to support guide andbuild relationships with managers and staff
Effectivecommunication skills both written and verbal with the ability to provideclear direction and reporting
Demonstratedorganizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiplepriorities in a fast-paced environment
Strongproblem-solving skills with a practical solutions-focused approach tooperational challenges
Proficiencywith administrative and financial systems (e.g. payroll systems such asPayworks reporting tools and Microsoft Office Suite)
