Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY
A Deputy Sheriff Sergeant shall be a supervisor.
A Deputy Sheriff Sergeant should be energetic competent dependable and efficient to carry out all the required daily duties and functions of the Sheriffs Office.
They shall provide for safety for the public by maintaining order responding to emergencies rendering first aid and arresting and assisting in prosecuting persons who have violated the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The duties of a Deputy Sergeant often require a great deal of physical stamina in dangerous or uncomfortable situations. The position requires that many functions be performed outdoors regardless of the weather.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
One of approximately 60 Deputy Sheriffs.
Sergeants reports to the Lieutenants Chief Deputy and Sheriff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
In addition to being able to perform the essential job function of a Deputy Sheriff the following are the essential functions particular to that of a Deputy Sheriff Sergeant:
Assign and schedule Deputies to their daily duties.
Schedule the daily transportation of prisoners from and to the Lancaster County Prison.
When assigned duties as the Transport Sergeant schedule prisoner transports to and from prisons throughout the Commonwealth and surrounding states.
Quartermaster duties when so assigned include fleet (vehicle) maintenance and overseeing the inventory of deputy equipment issue order or replace equipment as necessary.
Use best hiring practices associated with vetting prospective employees to include: background investigations telephone interviews scheduling and conducting physical agility tests conducting oral board evaluations scheduling physicals scheduling polygraphs scheduling drug screenings and scheduling psychological evaluations.
Prepare new hires for the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Basic Training Academy and coordinate with the assigned Training Sergeant to ensure that the new hires receive the necessary and appropriate training before the new deputy is assigned to Field Training.
Coordinate with Court Sergeants when assigning new deputies to Field Training Deputies.
When assigned as an Evidence Custodian be knowledgeable of evidence documentation procedures and law. Properly log evidence in and out of storage. Determine appropriate dates for destruction and oversee the destruction of property/evidence.
When assigned as the Civil Sergeant monitor all aspects of the service of civil paperwork. Assign and supervise deputies so that the service of civil paperwork is accomplished in an efficient manner. Ensure that service is proper and timely. Coordinate vehicle assignments with the Sergeant assigned Quartermaster duties. Oversee deputy service of Protection from Abuse Orders and the confiscation return and destruction of weapons derived from the service of those orders.
Training Sergeant duties provide or arrange for training for all deputies Track and maintain the training schedule and assure that all necessary certifications for deputies are current. Maintain all training records. Be knowledgeable of current best law enforcement practices and case law in order to provide and determine the most relevant and up to date training. Maintain all required instructor certifications. Coordinate with the quartermaster to provide new hires with appropriate training and equipment prior to them attending the academy.
Perform any and all tasks as may be assigned by the Sheriff Chief Deputy or a Lieutenant.
OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES
Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Deputy Sheriff and Sheriff which could require overtime.
Assist the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the office with daily assignments.
Assist the Lieutenants with conducting employee evaluations and pre-employment interviews K-9 handling and training and any other assignments deemed necessary by the Sheriff Chief Deputy or the Lieutenants.
A Sergeant is classified as an Essential Employee and shall follow the County Policy as outlined in section D-11 for Emergency Closing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 21 years of age possess a valid Pennsylvania Drivers license and acceptable driving record in accordance with the county policy.
Must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Prefer three years of experience as a deputy sheriff police officer or law enforcement professional.
Must be Act 2 (Deputy Sheriff Education and Training Act- 1984 Act 2) certified or able to obtain Act 2 certification as mandated by Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) .
If the applicant is ACT 120 (MPOETC) certified or is able to obtain ACT 120 certification the applicant must successfully complete the PCCD two-week waiver training as mandated by the State.
Any equivalent combination of education experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills and ability to perform this job may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must complete all subjects contained in the training modules of the Deputy Sheriffs Training Board re-certification training which is required every other year.
Failure to re-certify will cause the Sergeant Deputys Commission as a Deputy Sheriff to terminate.
Must successfully complete yearly training as required.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCES
Must have a valid Pennsylvania Drivers License and acceptable driving record in accordance with the county policy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position has been identified as having the potential for exposure to Hepatitis B.
Access to training and a voluntary vaccination against Hepatitis is provided.
This position also has the potential for prolonged periods of sitting standing and lifting heavy objects.
Exposure to all kinds of weather conditions could apply to this position.
