Position Overview

This position is responsible for training and certifying all Nuclear Density Technicians ensuring effectiveembankment and subgrade construction practices are used on all district projects as well as responsible for inventory of nuclear testing devices and distribution of radiation badges. This position also prepares soil boring logs pavement core reports and maintains the districts geotechnical databases.

Essential Functions

  • Trains certifies and motivates district personnel in the use of nuclear density gauges on construction projects.
  • Maintains the districts nuclear density gauges.
  • Ensures that compliance with the departmental safety rules and regulations are met especially with theradioactive testing gauges.
  • Reviews all soil density reports submitted to the district office made by department personnel on state city or county projects.
  • Prepares soil boring logs and pavement core logs.
  • Researches old pavement and foundation data.
  • Performs testing and inspection of foundations embankments and subgrades.
  • Maintains the districts geotechnical records.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of college in engineering technology pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to direct the work of other engineers technicians equipment operators and laborers.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ArcGIS Pro.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires valid drivers license.
  • Requires ability to lift over 50 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to pass pre-employment physical examination and drug and alcohol testing.
  • Requires S-33 Soils Field Testing and Inspection and S-34 Radiation Safety certification.
  • Requires the ability to pass the departments Nuclear Gauge Operator Training within 12 months and maintain the certification through the yearly Nuclear Gauge Operator Recurrent Training.
  • Extensive district-wide travel and to central office totaling over 10000 miles per year and some overnight travel to attend training and meetings.
  • 24/7 on-call availability.
