The Emergency Trainee is responsible for assessment and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED); communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patients care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patients condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; arrangement of patient discharge process and liaison with GPs and other community care services to ensure the provision of optimal patient care to patients presenting to St. Vincents Hospital (SVH).SVH ED is a busy department treating approximately 51000 patients each year. About 46% are admitted to the Hospital from the ED each day a figure thatrepresentssome 50% of all hospital admissions. The hospital is a trauma centre and has ECMO capabilities. The department is accredited for themaximumED training time (levelTS4).


Work in the Emergency is at times demanding and difficult. Patients come from all levels of society and present a wide spectrum and complexity of both medicaland social the department is often crowded and busy staff should be mindful that they need toprotect patients privacy and confidentiality at all times. Despite these demands work in our ED can be extremely fulfilling on a personal and a professional level. Our department has a FLEXI Clinic which has proven to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople. All serviceswith the exception ofPaediatrics and Obstetrics are provided at SVH In the event that paediatric / obstetric patients self-present to St. Vincents Emergency they are stabilised and transferred by ambulance if to the nearest Hospital able to provide those services.

TERMS:EmergencyATsundertake a variety of terms at SVH: Emergency Anaesthetics ICUDrug and Alcohol and our PANDA unit (Psychiatric and Non-prescription Drug and Alcohol). There is also an opportunity to do a Special Skills term in Simulation and a Special Interest term in ultrasound working towardsCCPUmodules. Otherpossible secondmentsoutside of StVincents include Sutherland Hospital Emergency Sydney Childrens Hospital Emergency Canterbury Emergency Canterbury Anaesthetics and Northern Beaches Hospital Emergency. There is ample scope to personalise and tailor your training according to your interests with some of ourprevioustrainees going to Retrieval Medicine Medical Education and seconded to smaller rural hospitals. Wehave a Director of Research in our department who will provide support for those completing the researchcomponentof their training.

EDUCATION and WELL-BEING:There is a comprehensivePrimary Exam preparation program and individualised support for preparation towards the FellowshipExams. All trainees receive 4 hours of paid protected teaching each week. With a paediatric Emergency Physician on staff our trainees receive the required paediatric education according toCollegeguidelines. We alsohave a formal mentoring program and prioritise well-being for all trainees and support training for those returning fromparental leave.

Essential Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent currentlyregisteredor eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

  • A minimum of three (3) full years of postgraduate experience andsignificant experiencein an Australian Emergency Department or equivalent.

  • Has qualified as an Advanced Trainee as per the requirements by ACEM or expects to have met the criteria by commencement of employment. Demonstrated commitment to and satisfactory progress in the ACEM Training program.

  • This position is subject toan appropriate supervisionlevel which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbents registration conditions include supervision requirements the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.

  • Valid NSW Working with Children Check.

  • Cleared National Police Check.

  • Aged Care Check for Australian Government funded positions.

  • Current immunity status thatcomplies withthe NSW Health Policy Directive Occupational AssessmentScreening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases (PD2022030) as amended isinforceorintroduced from time to time.
