Job Summary

Screw Machinist ACME / Davenport
Pay: $30-$40/hr (DOE)
1st shift - 6:00am 2:30pm
2nd shift - 2:15pm 10:45pm

Position Summary:
The Screw machinist performs a variety of tasks sets up and operates one or more multiple-spindle automatic lathe-type screw machines. These machines are used to produce custom parts from stock metal or other materials. Screw machinist ensures the machine is properly set up to perform the various operations needed to produce these parts. Reads blueprints and determines exactly what screw machine settings are needed to create an actual working part from the plans. The machinist chooses cutting speeds the depth of cuts how fast the machine should run and which cutting tools should be used for each operation bases decisions on experience knowledge about the materials being used and basic mathematic principles.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for following blueprints and job order specifications such as dimensions tolerance number of parts to be machined and tooling instructions such as cutting speeds feed rates depth of cuts and cutting tools to be used.
  • Positions and secures specified collets bushing and stock pushers onto stock feeding mechanism and loads bar stock into feeding mechanism.
  • Installs and adjusts specified cams gears and stops to control stock and tool movements at each station.
  • Positions and secures tools to tool holders and sets up cutting speeds and feed rates.
  • Moves controls to cycle machine through setting by stopping machine adjusting tools positions and machine controls to allow for operating factors such as timing and clearance between moving parts and chip removal.
  • After starting machine observes operating and inspects first run and samples work piece to ensure machine conforms to specifications.
  • Constantly checks parts using micrometers or gages and records SPC data as instructed.
  • Reports completion of running orders to lead.
  • Replaces worn tools.
  • Operates bench and surface grinder to sharpen tools and pparticipate in bench assembly operations as workload requires. Perform various grinding deburring tapping tap burning reaming etc. to obtain proper fit alignment and/or operation of items. Operate various hand tools drill presses tap burner etc.
  • Remove burs on all machined parts.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • 5 to 7 years experience setting up and operating Multiple Spindle Screw Machines.
  • Has completed a formal training program or equivalent with certificate of competency.
  • Proficient in the use of Statistical Process Control (SPC) in maintaining quality standards.
  • Knowledge of standard tools required to include precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Ability to independently set up and operate automatic screw machines to perform any operation within their normal capacity.
  • Advance set-ups interpret layouts/edit programs.
  • Ability to reference speeds and feeds charts calculate and set machine to maximize equipment capability.
  • Able to analyze best tools to be used given work material and machining method.
  • Ability to make layout/do program (Selects best tool sequence.)
  • Advanced machine maintenance.
  • Train other operators to elevate their skills.
  • Trouble-shoot problems using machining practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of materials tool wear and tool geometry (radius on insert tooling) and tool sequence.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as metrics fractions percentage ratios and proportions fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry to practical situations. Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents logarithms quadratic equations and permutations
