Job Description

The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director to join their team.

The UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences houses a Field Research and Consultant Group (FRCG) and is seeking a full-time Associate Director located on the Seattle campus. The FRCG is a small group of workplace health and safety (H&S) professionals who provide no cost services throughout the state of Washington conduct workplace H&S research support students in the field and disseminate occupational H&S information to those in need. FRCG and its Associate Director work closely with the Departments other service units including a highly capable and comprehensive AIHA accredited Environmental Health Laboratory (EHL) Continuing Education and Occupational and Environmental Medicine program.

The successful candidate will oversee the FRCG provide technical and applied experience for our academic and continuing education students and potentially contribute to instruction of technical academic and continuing education classes in the field of industrial hygiene. Responsibilities include a combination of program management and intellectual contribution to the teaching and service missions of the Department.

Specific duties include:

Programmatic Leadership: Direct all aspects of the Field Research and Consultation Group (FRCG) including serving as the liaison to numerous existing and potential clients throughout Washington state. The Associate Director communicates directly with various leaders in business governmental agencies non-profits and other organizations to convey the various resources available through FRCG as well as provide consultation on a myriad of questions and problems. Ensure activities of FRCG are consistent with the parameters of the Washington state appropriation funding and serve as the leader of one of the departments four service programs to integrate resources across the department for a comprehensive approach. Initiate and partner with others to conduct strategic planning. The Associate Director may be asked to work with a faculty advisory committee or task force assembled to support the field service and laboratory efforts mission and strategic plan development and implementation. Service Provision: Oversee FRCG tracking and metrics of service. Tracking clients sample processing and other metrics to provide reports to Department leadership as well as others. Initiate and participate in field-based research on occupational health and safety hazard characterization and exposure control. Mentor staff and students who spend majority of time in field addressing business concerns and guide approach based on industrial hygiene and occupational safety expertise. (25%)

Operations and Finance: Supervise current and future staff; current staffing is four industrial hygienists mentoring and guiding the work of the staff providing direct support in navigating complex questions balancing a fluctuating workload providing an intermediary between the faculty and other clients with the staff. Oversee finances to ensure audit compliance fiscal solvency and adequate balance of work responsiveness to the various service and clients. The Associate Director is responsible for performance evaluations and assessment of workloads for temporary and permanent hires. (20%)

Field and Laboratory Resource Management: Direct on-site safety compliance and oversight including managing laboratory safety surveys and compliance while ensuring an up-to-date safety plan is in place. Oversee and conduct planning repair replacement and new acquisition of instrumentation. Lead streamlined efficiency efforts integrating technology and personnel work flow to ensure sustained quality accurate results and efficient functioning of the laboratory. Partner with department faculty leadership and communication team to develop content and look of informative webpages for external and internal audiences. (10%)

Classroom Training and Contribution to Academic Mission: The Associate Director may contribute to the departments Continuing Education group of subject matter experts to provide instruction to clients enrolling for professional education training and occupational health and safety training certification. Activities include contributing to the development of course content and materials providing in-class instruction mentorship of professional students grading and evaluation and course follow-up. The Associate Director may also partner with department faculty regarding hands-on academic training for graduate and undergraduate students. Activities may include development and oversight of field-based projects FRCG assignments and laboratory sample collection analyses and report development staff participation on master level degree committees and other contributions to the academic mission available for staff positions. (10%) .

Minimum Qualifications:

• Masters degree with a focus on industrial/occupational hygiene or allied/related field

• At least3 yearsexperiencewithoccupationalhealthand safety withsignificant experienceinindustrial hygienepractice.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional Qualifications:

• At least 1 yearsexperiencewith programmanagement.

• An up-to-date Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential

• Valid drivers license with at least 2 years experience driving

• Be able to drive to potentially distant sites in Washington State

• Ability to safely walk through active worksites including areas with uneven temporary or otherwise challenging walking surfaces.

• General ability to be in person in the office at least 3 days a week
