Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time or equivalent part-time technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction survey design transportation hydraulics structural sanitary drafting environmental highway architectural airport soils and materials of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions

I. An Associates degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*

II. A Bachelors degree with a major in civil engineering** or civil engineering technology** may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*

III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering** may be substituted for the required experience.*

**NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction survey design transportation hydraulics structural soils sanitary environmental drafting highway architectural mining airport and materials.

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:Based on assignment possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License may be required.

Position Summary

The incumbent will assist with all aspects of Road Safety Audits from setting up the organizing the meetings providing the analysis facilitating the meeting and reviewing the accompanying report. This will also include communicating with consultants local regional State and Federal personnel. The person will need familiarity with the Highway Safety Manual for countermeasure selection evaluation and prioritization of recommendations and projects. The incumbent will need to conduct field work related to highway safety speed zoning and other Traffic/Safety needs. Furthermore the person in this position assists with all aspects of crash data analysis including geocoding crashes pulling/redacting crashes summarizing data and compiling/mapping results.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts analyses of safety issues through research & use of the IMPACT and supervises others (including CEIs interns and co-ops) in ( and other means.

  • Assists in performing crash analysis of potential HSIP projects.

  • Attends/assists Road Safety Audits (including preparations of collision diagrams and summaries report reviews) and teaches CEIs and interns how to perform this task.

  • Locates crashes and assists in development / identification of top crash locations.

  • Pulls and redacts crashes.

  • Reviews alternative safety analysis evaluations Functional Design Reports Tech Memos Plans Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) and other information focusing on safety.

  • Organizes materials for specific crash requests and site visits.

  • Conducts roadway infrastructure safety inspections in the field for projects based on specific requests.

  • Understands and uses Highway Safety Manual methodologies.

  • Conducts tasks as needed for Traffic and Safety on specified tasks project reviews etc.

  • Works on development and implementation of low-cost systemic safety projects.

  • Assists with FHWA and other safety initiatives on development and implementation of low-cost systemic safety projects.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5000) signing bonus (Signing Bonus) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employees first paycheck. 2) $2000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employees probationary period.
