This position provides security law enforcement and other services to local schools.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Patrols the interior and exterior of school buildings to communicate with students teachers and staff; deter behavioral problems and crime; build positive relationships; and provide services.
- Monitors parking lots for suspicious vehicles and individuals; inspects doors to ensure they remain locked.
- Works with school administrators parents counselors students other law enforcement officers and representatives of external agencies to develop and implement drug prevention crime prevention internet safety and other relevant programming.
- Provides mentorship and support to students.
- Performs the duties of a patrol officer as assigned; responds to calls for service; patrols the city to detect and deter crime and to assist the public; enforces traffic laws; issues warnings and citations; makes arrests; prepares related reports.
- Prepares and delivers presentations to administrators teachers parents and students.
- Provides security and other support for sporting and other school events.
- Performs related duties.
- When school is out an officer will function as a patrol officer.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of school district policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of school safety principles and practices.
- Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices.
- Knowledge of criminal investigation principles and practices.
- Knowledge of crime scene processing and evidence collection principles and practices.
- Knowledge of department training requirements.
- Knowledge of local state and federal laws.
- Skill in the enforcement of local state and federal laws.
- Skill in conducting criminal investigations.
- Skill in the use of specialized law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in working with the public.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The CID Lieutenant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The SRO supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include the Official Code of Georgia Annotated federal law local ordinances school system policies and procedures and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment selection and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related school resource and law enforcement duties. The need to respond to potentially dangerous and life-threatening situations contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to perform provide law enforcement support for assigned schools. Success in this position contributes to school safety and bridges the gap between law enforcement and the community.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers other city personnel teachers and administrators students parents representatives of other law enforcement agencies victims of crimes witnesses suspects and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to provide services to give or exchange information to motivate persons or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting standing walking bending crouching or stooping The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects climbs ladders uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity distinguishes between shades of color and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors in inclement weather and at emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases irritating chemicals and dangers associated with law enforcement and emergency response activities. Work requires the use of protective devices and other specialized law enforcement equipment.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required; and
- More than one of related experience required; or
- Any equivalent combination of education experience and training which provides the knowledge skills and abilities to perform the work.
- Possession of a valid state drivers license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- POST Certification Basic.
