The Senior Manager Peer Review & Editorial Product lead provides strategic leadership and governance for ASM Journals editorial technology portfolio. This role is responsible for establishing the vision strategic direction and multi-year roadmap for all pre-acceptance editorial systems including submission platforms peer review systems and related editorial workflows. The Senior Manager oversees a team of managers and staff responsible for peer review operations and publishing system implementation ensuring alignment across teams and with organizational priorities. This position serves as the primary liaison to senior leadership on editorial technology strategy vendor partnerships and major platform decisions. The role ensures ASM Journals maintains a cohesive innovative editorial technology ecosystem that serves the needs of editors reviewers and authors while supporting the organizations commitment to rigorous peer review and publication excellence.

Essential Functions

1. Establishes strategic vision and multi-year roadmap for the editorial technology portfolio ensuring alignment with organizational goals publishing trends and emerging technologies including AI/ML applications open peer review models and preprint integration. Translates vision into actionable priorities and resource allocation decisions.
2. Provides leadership and oversight to direct reports including the Manager of Peer Review Manager of Publishing Systems and potentially the Project Manager. Sets performance expectations develops talent manages team capacity and ensures coordination across functional areas.
3. Owns product governance framework for all editorial systems including submission platforms peer review systems and editorial workflow tools. Establishes decision-making criteria prioritization frameworks and investment strategies across the editorial technology portfolio.
4. Leads vendor strategy for editorial technology platforms including evaluation of build-vs-buy decisions platform selection for major transitions negotiation of enterprise agreements and oversight of vendor performance against strategic objectives. Serves as executive sponsor for vendor relationships.
5. Drives cross-portfolio initiatives that require coordination across peer review operations publishing systems implementation and production workflows. Ensures seamless integration and eliminates silos between editorial and production technology ecosystems.
6. Collaborates with senior editorial and operational leadership including Editors-in-Chief Managing Editors and department directors to understand strategic needs communicate technology capabilities and constraints and align editorial technology investments with journal development priorities.
7. Establishes portfolio-level metrics and KPIs for editorial technology effectiveness including user satisfaction system reliability adoption rates and innovation outcomes. Reviews performance dashboards identifies strategic improvements and reports progress to senior leadership.
8. Serves as thought leader and industry representative for ASM Journals in editorial technology and peer review innovation. Participates in industry working groups speaks at conferences and brings external best practices and emerging trends to inform internal strategy.
9. Oversees change management strategy for major editorial system transitions policy changes and workflow transformations. Ensures appropriate stakeholder engagement communication planning and organizational readiness for technology changes.
10. Manages budget and resource allocation for editorial technology investments working with the Senior Director to develop annual budgets evaluate ROI on proposed initiatives and make trade-off decisions across competing priorities.
11. Provides strategic input on organizational initiatives related to open access models research integrity data governance and metadata standards as they relate to editorial systems and workflows.
12. Ensures knowledge management and succession planning across the editorial technology organization maintaining institutional knowledge documenting strategic decisions and developing bench strength for critical roles.

Supervisory Responsibility
1. For employees reporting directly to this position the incumbent is responsible for making hiring decisions managing the annual performance appraisal process coaching mentoring and providing approval for vacation & time-off requests.
2. All facets of this position are self-directed within the policies and procedures approved by the Chief Publishing Officer and guidelines established by the departments Senior Director in partnership with the organizations Senior Leadership team.
3. This position is responsible to the Senior Director Publishing Operations or their designee and the departments fiscal management and in this capacity rules on the allocation of expenditures.
4. In partnership with the departments Senior Director this position is responsible for departmental decision-making regarding personnel actions the acquisition and utilization of resources procedures and control systems.
5. This position supports the departments Senior Director in overseeing the development of budgets for all existing programs and new proposals providing signatory approval for expenditures contracts subcontracts and personal service agreements.
Physical Demands
This role is primarily sedentary and involves prolonged periods of sitting and extensive use of computers and other digital devices. Employees may be required to engage in repetitive motions such as typing and mouse use. Occasional movement may be necessary to access office supplies or equipment within a home or remote workspace. This requires a reliable internet connection and a suitable home office setup including standard equipment such as a computer monitor keyboard mouse and headset. Ergonomic considerations are encouraged to promote comfort and reduce physical strain during extended work hours.

Salary Range
$116792.00 $154760.00
Hybrid- This role has location flexibility with the need to travel for business needs including travel to the ASM headquarters in Washington DC.
