Job Summary

Job Title:Coach (Various Sports/Positions) Wage/ Status: Exempt

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY

The primary function of a Coach is to support the growth development and overall success of student-athletes through instruction supervision and leadership in the assigned sport(s). Coaches are expected to foster skill development sportsmanship accountability teamwork and character while positively representing Westlake Academy and intentionally applying the IB Learner Profile traits to athlete development team culture and daily coaching practices. Depending on the assigned role coaches may also assist with or oversee program operations including communication scheduling travel equipment and team management.

*This coaching position may be filled as a stipend-only coaching assignment. However Westlake Academy may give priority consideration to current employees or candidates who are also being considered for approved full-time positions based on program needs and staffing alignment.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelors degree and Valid Texas teaching certificate preferred
  • Current certification in First Aid CPR AED and Heat Illness Prevention or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Possession of or willingness to obtain a valid Texas commercial drivers license (CDL) with Passenger (P) School Bus (S) and Air Brakes endorsements is preferred.
  • Completion of the state-required fingerprinting and criminal background check

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of league athletic association and sport-specific rules and procedures
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable league school and athletic program rules
  • Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical (include if bus driving duties are required)
  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Experience:

  • 5 years coaching or participant experience in sport assigned

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructional Strategies

  • Model and intentionally incorporate IB Learner Profile traits and Westlake Academy values into coaching practices athlete development and team culture.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned.
  • Manage and supervise athletic activities contests and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills teamwork and good sportsmanship.
  • Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.

Program Management

  • Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis. Model performance criteria and physical movements required for successful student performance of sport.
  • Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes equipment material and facilities.
  • Work with the athletic director to schedule competitions and plan season activities including practices special events and tournaments.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements for athletic contests and events including communication with the Athletic Director and transportation department. Coaches may be asked to transport students to competitions if appropriately licensed and approved on an activity bus or van.
  • Ensure compliance with all UIL rules.
  • Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the coaching program and make changes based on findings.

Student Management

  • Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports both at home and on out-of-town trips.
  • Instruct and advise students on National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests practice sessions and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Encourage by example and through instruction sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students principals and teachers.

Administration

  • Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents required.
  • Assist with initiation and approval of purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Assist with the process of cleaning repairing and storing all campus athletic equipment and maintain a current inventory of all equipment and fixed assets within the program.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Head Coaches: May assign direct and oversee the work of assistant coaches student athletic assistants and team support personnel as applicable to the assigned sport and program needs.
  • Assistant Coaches: Support the Head Coach and Athletic Director in carrying out assigned coaching supervision and program responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

Tools/Equipment Used:Athletic equipment standard office equipment including computer and peripherals and other instructional equipment; automated external defibrillator (AED);operate school bus

Posture:Prolonged standing; kneeling squatting bending and stooping;frequent driving; moderate grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension and reaching

Motion:Frequent walking and physical movements associated with sport(s) assigned

Lifting:Frequently light lifting (less than 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting or carrying (15-44 pounds)

Environment:Work outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather) and inside; frequent exposure to noise; frequent district wide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours;moderate exposure to vehicle fumes and work around moving vehicles

Mental Demands:Maintain emotional control under stress
