Job Summary

As an Associate Retail Underwriter you will be responsible for analyzing and underwriting residential mortgage loans in accordance with Agency investor and program standards. This role requires a strong understanding of lending regulations credit risk analysis and mortgage products along with the ability to manage a high-volume pipeline in a fast-paced environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite residential mortgage loans including conventional government jumbo portfolio and construction products.
  • Analyze borrower income assets credit history title and collateral to determine creditworthiness
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments based on financial data and lending guidelines
  • Review and validate appraisals inspections flood certifications and title documentation for accuracy and compliance
  • Calculate qualifying ratios and ensure adherence to Agency and investor standards
  • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly including approvals conditions or denials
  • Prepare required documentation such as commitment letters adverse action notices and HMDA-related files
  • Collaborate with Mortgage Loan Originators processors and branch staff to ensure efficient loan flow and timely closings
  • Update and manage loan files within the loan origination system
  • Clear conditions and issue final approvals
  • Assist with quality control reviews (pre- and post-closing) and investor conditions
  • Support loan packaging and delivery to secondary market investors
  • Provide guidance training and mentorship to junior team members


Core Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent requires
  • Bachelors degree in Business Finance or related field preferred
  • In lieu of bachelors degree: 5-7 years of mortgage processing and underwriting experience required
  • Strong proficiency in reading writing grammar and mathematics
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and consensus-building skills
  • Deep knowledge of consumer lending principles policies and regulations
  • Ability to evaluate financial data and determine creditworthiness
  • Experience with loan origination systems (LOS) required- Encompass preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with FNMA and FHLMC programs
  • FHA DE and/or VA SAR designation preferred (not required)
  • Strong analytical data interpretation and time management skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment
