Job Summary
DESCRIPTION: Under direction of the Public Works Director and general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent this position performs a variety of skilled and technical tasks relative to the day-to-day operations maintenance and repair of the Towns buildings roads grounds open spaces cemetery parks and/or recreation systems. Duties may include operating vehicles and equipment that require a Commercial Driver License (CDL). This position understands public trust and models the highest standards of personal and professional integrity expected of those working in public service. Specific functions comprising the position may vary depending on the priorities and needs of the Town and/or requirements of state law. Employees in this class typically work a forty (40) hour work week however schedules may change depending on the needs of the organization.
CLASSIFICATION: This is a FLSA non-exempt full-time position with full benefits. The salary range for this position starts at $37269 (17.92/hr.). Highly qualified candidates may start above minimum DOQ.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: Essential functions as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include the following tasks knowledge skills and other characteristics. - Assists with the organization and operations of the Public Works Operations Department.
- Mows applies herbicides for weed control in accordance with safety guidelines and maintains cemetery parks open spaces rights-of-way and alleys throughout the Town.
- Performs maintenance and repair of sprinkler systems including installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
- Operates tractors mowers backhoes and other equipment as needed.
- Plants lawns trees shrubs and flowers. Carries out the seeding fertilizing top dressing soil conditioning watering tree trimming and pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.
- Inspects washes and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and public restrooms.
- Sweeps washes paints and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs.
- Opens closes locks and unlocks facilities as needed; sets up and dismantles equipment for events and park programs.
- Performs routine custodial and facility support duties including cleaning and maintaining Town buildings mopping and sanitizing floors and cleaning and restocking restrooms.
- Performs semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting plumbing carpentry and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
- Patches road surfaces by cleaning potholes applying patching materials leveling and packing.
- Builds forms mixes concrete and does concrete work.
- Cleans rebuilds and repairs drains and culverts digs drainage ditches.
- Installs and maintains street signs and markings.
- Assists in the construction of new parks facilities including clearing grading drainage and foundation work.
- Documents and maintains accurate records of work completed.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned.
Qualifications :
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience:
Possession of a High School Diploma or GED is the minimum education required. Any combination of education and/or experience which provides the knowledge skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance is acceptable. Proven experience in the essential functions and duties of the position is preferred.
Special Requirements Licenses and Certificates
- Must possess a valid Arizona drivers license (or ability to transfer an out-of-state license to Arizona immediately) and maintain an excellent driving record.
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) preferred; or must have the ability to obtain appropriate CDL within six (6) months of hire.
- Required to obtain fingerprint card and Arizona Department of Agriculture Certified Applicator License within six (6) months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of equipment materials and supplies used in building grounds and street maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of proper use of hand and power tools used for minor repairs.
- Skilled in use and care of tools equipment and safety devices.
- Ability to safely and effectively work with and around tools power tools and equipment.
- Ability to practice and adhere to safety standards and practices.
- Ability to perform manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and direction.
- Ability to communicate clearly whether verbally or in writing with individuals from various socioeconomic ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective positive working relationships.
- Ability to organize and prioritize and to work independently at times under time constraints and deadlines.

- The physical abilities to traverse uneven terrain climb ladders perform repairs on equipment wear a respirator and use potable water utility equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is regularly performed in both an inside environment and outside weather conditions which can include rain and extreme heat near moving mechanical parts and there is occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.
- Work may require travel to manage projects or to attend meetings training events etc.
- The noise level is varied; it can be usual to that of an inside office environment and outdoor can be potentially loud particularly when equipment is operating.
- The work environment can be near moving mechanical parts and/or in the presence of vibration.
- The employee is often required to walk over uneven flooring or outdoor terrain.
- The employee may be required to work outside normally scheduled hours and/or assigned to report to a specific location for training and/or meeting attendance.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear; use hands to finger handle feel or operate objects tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
