Job Summary
Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for a Professional and Technical Education: Secondary Automotive Technology Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. Working under the direction of the Supervisor of Career and Technical Education this position will be responsible for teaching students the fundamentals of automotive mechanics diagnostics and repair as well as preparing students to successfully obtain industry certification. The role will involve developing lesson plans deliver engaging classroom instruction and provide hands-on training in the automotive shop. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in automotive technology excellent communication skills and a commitment to providing and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
DUTIES:
The teacher is responsible for creating a supporting educational atmosphere that empowers students to reach their full potential in intellectual and skill development. This teacher is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program that will result in students achieving academic success in a hands-on contextual learning environment while also developing workplace skills in the trade area. Primary responsibilities are:
- Develop and deliver comprehensive lesson plans and curriculum materials aligned with automotive technology standards and objectives.
- Instruct students on automotive theory diagnostics repair and maintenance procedures utilizing both classroom instruction and hands-on practical activities in the shop.
- Supervise and guide students in performing automotive repairs ensuring adherence to safety protocols and industry best practices.
- Provide individualized instruction and support to students with varying learning needs and abilities fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Administer assessments and evaluate student performance to track progress and identify areas for improvement providing timely feedback and guidance for skill development to prepare students for ASE Certification.
- Maintain the automotive shop facility equipment and inventory ensuring a safe organized and functional learning environment conducive to hands-on learning experiences.
- Work collaboratively with Career Coaches to coordinate college and business tours career related field trips and employment and college fairs.
- Participate in professional development to stay current with job market trends and needs internship and apprenticeship opportunities CTE programs and educational opportunities.
- Maintain confidential and accurate records and comply with all federal state and local laws governing data privacy and safety.
- Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students parents peers and the community.
- Model workplace maturity by leading students development toward positive workplace skills and attitudes.
- Assume responsibility for meeting course and school-wide student performance goals and works to demonstrate gains in student performance and job placement.
- Participate in training as required.
- Establish an active partnership with a trade-related Program Advisory Council (PAC) to stay abreast of current and emerging automotive technologies and industry trends integrating relevant advancements into the curriculum.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A high school diploma or equivalency.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification; Master Certification preferred.
- Three (3) years of occupational experience within the last ten (10) years preferred.
- Be eligible for a Maryland State Department of Education Professional teaching license in Professional and Technical Education within two (2) or four (4) years depending on necessary credits.
- Able to operate equipment/machinery as needed in the instruction of the trade.
- Able to work effectively with administrators colleagues staff students parents and the community.
- Have excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
