ROLE OVERVIEW
Provide health safety and environmental support to the project staff workforce and Health Safety & Environment departments. Where required provide advice to project staff and key stakeholders.
Thiess is seeking Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Coordinator project-based role to support our mining team. The HSE Coordinator is a key role working with all functions of the business. Duties will include coordination of daily HSE functions and support activities input into the Thiess HSE data and incident management systems.
The HSE Coordinator will be required to work independently and collaboratively with other North American HSE team members and the North American regional leadership. They will also warn the Regional HSE Management about process deficiencies or schedule slippage and will be skilled in computer programs and developing databases spreadsheets presentations and HSE literature.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
LEADERSHIP GOVERNANCE & REPORTING
- Reports to the Health Safety Environment Supervisor
- Maintains a visible and active field presence across operational areas
- Builds effective working relationships with supervisors crews contractors and client representatives
- Supports coordination of daily HSE activities and site priorities
- Assists in preparation of daily weekly and monthly HSE reports
- Provides timely and accurate information to support site and regional reporting requirements
- Identifies and escalates gaps in execution compliance or system effectiveness
FIELD EXECUTION RISK MANAGEMENT & CRITICAL CONTROLS - Conducts regular field interactions inspections and verifications across site
- Supports the identification of hazards and ensures controls are implemented and maintained
- Executes and supports Critical Control Verifications (CCVs) for high-risk activities
- Reinforces key risk areas including traffic management isolation and mobile equipment interactions
- Works with supervisors and crews to ensure risk assessments (JHAs task-based assessments) are practical and effective
- Supports Management of Change (MoC) processes by identifying operational risks and verifying controls in the field
- Participates in Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) inspections and activities
INCIDENT MANAGEMENT ASSURANCE & SYSTEMS - Supports and coordinates incident reporting and investigation processes in Synergy
- Assists supervisors with investigations using structured methodologies (e.g. 5 Whys ICAM principles)
- Tracks and follows up on corrective actions to ensure timely close-out
- Verifies that implemented actions are effective and sustainable
- Supports internal and external audits and ensures findings are tracked through to completion
- Monitors leading indicators including hazards inspections and critical control performance
HEALTH ENVIRONMENT & COMPLIANCE SUPPORT - Supports implementation and monitoring of environmental and compliance requirements on site
- Assists with tracking environmental obligations permits and conditions
- Supports occupational hygiene programs including monitoring of dust noise diesel particulate matter and vibration
- Works in alignment with Ontario Regulation 854 (the green book) and other applicable legislation
- Assists with emergency preparedness activities including drills and response readiness
PEOPLE TRAINING & CAPABILITY - Supports delivery of HSE orientations and onboarding activities.
- Reinforces safety expectations and standards with frontline workers
- Assists in identifying training needs and tracking completion of required competencies
- Coaches supervisors and crews on quality reporting hazard identification and system use
- Promotes proactive safety behaviours and supports a Just Culture environment
WORKERS COMPENSATION RETURN TO WORK & CONSULTATION - Supports WSIB reporting and documentation processes
- Assists in coordinating return-to-work programs and modified duties
- Maintains communication with supervisors and HSE team regarding worker status and requirements
- Ensures timely reporting and documentation in line with legislative requirements
STANDARDS CULTURE & COMPLIANCE - Supports implementation of site HSE standards procedures and systems
- Reinforces Stop Work Authority and safe work expectations
- Participates in HSE initiatives campaigns and continuous improvement activities
- Assists in development of HSE materials including reports presentations and communications
- Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act company policies and procedures
- Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Post-secondary qualification in Occupational Health & Safety or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Basic to intermediate understanding of incident investigation methodologies (e.g. 5 Whys ICAM)
- Relevant safety or health certifications considered an asset
- Strong practical understanding of workplace hazard identification and risk control
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 2 years experience in mining or heavy industrial environment
- Strong field-based experience supporting safety execution and inspections
- Understanding of mining operations including production and maintenance activities
- Working knowledge of Ontario Regulation 854 and OH&S Act
- Experience supporting inspections audits and hazard management processes
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word Excel PowerPoint)
- Experience with HSE systems such as Synergy is an asset
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to engage frontline workforce
- High attention to detail and strong follow-through
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
- Authorization to work lawfully in Canada without sponsorship from Thiess is required. (Applicants who qualify as an Intra-Company Transfer under the International Mobility Program may receive assistance from Thiess)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Location: Stobie Open Pit Mine Sudbury Ontario Canada
- Work Schedule: Monday to Friday with flexibility based on operational requirements
- Site-based role with significant field exposure
- Occasional local travel may be required
- Valid drivers license required
The salary range for this role isminimum $94760to a maximumof $118450 salary range is provided in good faith and is representative of all experience several factors when extending an offer including but not limited to the role function and associated responsibilities a candidates work experience location education/training and key skills and is ultimately determined at managements discretion.
