Job Summary

Job Title:Lead Care & Safety Assistant

Location:Charlottesville Middle School

Reports To:Principal

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

As part of our School Safety initiatives the Lead Care & Safety Assistantwill support our schools and more importantly help to ensure that our students are safe. The foundation of these initiatives is a commitment to wellness and promoting a positive school culture.

Essential Duties:

  • Coordinate CSA duty posts and rotations with school administration;
  • Provide daily direction and team leadership for the CSAs;
  • Receive and properly handle confidential student information to help coach the CSA team and other staff in times of crisis or physical interventions while following IEPs or Personalized Learning Plans;
  • Help create and maintain effective working relationships with the local first responders (police fire and rescue departments);
  • Coordinate with administration in the development and implementation of action plans to provide a safe environment and immediate response to imminent threats of violence criminal incidents medical situations vehicular accidents and other types of emergencies that may occur on campus;
  • Conduct and document facility inspections and audits of buildings grounds and student/staff procedures (i.e. drills) to ensure security and safety through compliance with State and local codes and regulations;
  • Reset alarm systems and test for proper operation as necessary;
  • Respond to fire and security alarms;
  • Assist with video surveillance following or during a crisis event and monitor problematic campus areas during school hours;
  • Support administration and staff in managing disruptive or crisis situations including assisting first responders on scene in navigating the campus;
  • Proactively identify and make recommendations to reduce safety risks and liability;
  • Prevent and manage workplace violence;
  • Effectively communicate safety protocols and improve school-community relations relating to safety;
  • Debrief problematic behavior with students by using a non-punitive non-adversarial trauma-informed model of care and problem solving;
  • Collaborate with staff in observing and recording student behaviors as needed to best support individual students and the school community;
  • Participate in professional activities and meetings as needed such as School-Based Intervention Team Threat Assessment and School Crisis Management Team meetings;
  • Collaborate with staff to manage crises and behaviors that are problematic for the school environment;
  • Develop positive relationships with all students in the building;
  • Identify potential conflicts or escalating situations and mediate to de-escalate and prevent disruptions in order to maximize instructional time and minimize negative impacts for the individuals and school community;
  • Promote and reinforce positive student behavior;
  • Observe and draft observation notes on incidents that occur within the building or facility including documenting and reporting damage to property;
  • Coordinate with school administrators to process violations of the Student Rights & Responsibilities code of conduct which include but are not limited to narcotics tobacco and/or alcohol violations;
  • Coordinate with school administration in investigations that include but are not limited to accidents behavioral incidents and issues related to harassment discrimination and other violations of school board policy;
  • Coordinates with school administration and staff to ensure the security of the building through implementation monitoring and review of visitor protocols.

Education & Experience:

High School Diploma (or equivalent).Minimum six months of related experience working with adolescents in an education or community environment.Ability to respond to difficult situations and to take appropriate action in stressful or emergency situations according to Board policies and procedures.Familiarity with secondary school operations and adolescent development.Relationships within the Charlottesville community.Current First Aid CPR and other relevant certifications (e.g. UMAB CPI) are assets.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Attend all meetings and training sessions as directed.Duties as assigned by the building principal.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge and practice of Culturally and Trauma Responsive strategies and bilingual in English and another World Language addition knowledge and experience in working and sustaining equitable services in the learning environment.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
Duties performed typically in school settings include: classroom; gym cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking standing light lifting up to 40 pounds and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary.
