DescriptionPosition available for a Research Scientist in a neuroscience laboratory (Gandy/Ehrlich) focused on study of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimers X-linked dystonia parkinsonism and Huntingtons should have experience in molecular cell and/or animal model systems. Experience with informatics is a plus. These projects involve a broad array of well-established techniques including mouse breeding and genotyping (with assistance from a research associate and outsourcing of genotyping) molecular biology (e.g. CrispR) histology cell culture including iPSCs primary cells and cell lines microdissection of tissues RNA and protein preparation and/or other specialized approaches to study neurodegeneration including a multi-omic approach.
Responsibilities- Conducts research to develop methodologies instrumentation and procedures for medical application analyzing data and presenting findings.
- Designs and conducts complex clinical research studies requiring the determination and evaluation of alternative methods computational modeling diagnosis and treatment.
- Plans and directs studies to investigate human or animal disease preventive methods and treatments for disease.
- May assist in clinical laboratory operations.
- Follows strict safety procedures when handling materials to avoid contamination.
- Teaches principles of medicine and medical and laboratory procedures to physicians residents students and research staff.
- Confers with health departments industry personnel physicians and others to develop health safety standards and public health improvement programs.
- Develops treatments and designs research tools and techniques.
- Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies.
- Develops hypotheses to be tested and methodology for evaluating results.
- Examines the results of clinical trials and adjusts the dosage levels to reduce negative side effects or to induce better results.
- Communicates research results to the scientific community via published papers.
- Develops new proposals for research and obtain support for new and/ or continuing research activities.
- Makes recommendations that have a major impact on extensive scientific research activities.
- Performs other related duties.
Qualifications- Ph.D. in Biological Science or related field
- Three years experience
Preferred Skills
- 3-years experience following a PhD in neuroscience cell biology pharmacology immunology biochemistry molecular biology pathology or related discipline.
- Evidence for independent skills in molecular biology and standard immunoprotein methods (e.g. immunoblotting immunoprecipitation immunohistochemistry ELISA) required. Experience with mouse handling husbandry and genotyping essential to work with Research Associates.
- Initially research a topic chosen by the PI but input from the person in this position is essential.
- Gather and analyze data.
- Prepare scientific reports manuscripts including figures and grant proposals the latter either independently or assistance of an application from the PI.
